WW1

Allied - British

Aircraft: Felixstowe F2A

Kit: Roden

Notes: Out-of-box build but an epic one! I had to hand draw the masks for the fuselage pattern. Not keen to repeat that...

Aircraft: Vickers FB.19 Bullet

Kit: KP Models

Notes: One of the excellent KP releases post 2020 of lesser known types. It almost looks like a caricature. Not particularly successful in WW1 it saw more service in the Russian Civil War. Reasonably quick build, aided by the simple scheme.

Aircraft: Bristol Scout D

Kit: Mac

Notes: Built as an AFC Palestine aircraft (Australian Flying Corps):

Display thread: https://uamf.org.uk/viewtopic.php?t=25515

Aircraft: Bristol F.2B

Kit: Airfix

Notes: Nicknamed the "Yellow Peril", this aircraft of 1 Sqn AFC in Palestine wreaked havoc on the Turks. Apparently there were standing orders to fire at it on sight. Exact details about the aircraft are very hard to find so I had to fill in the gaps. The Airfix kit is an ancient one and required a lot of wrangling to make it decent.

Aircraft: Sopwith One-and-a-Half Strutter (x2)

Kit: Eastern Express

Notes: I started building one of these, then lost the upper turtle deck, so I bought another, cloned the missing part in resin and built them both as if they were from the same squadron.

Aircraft: Sopwith One-and-a-Half Strutter single seat bomber

Kit: Toko/Eastern Express

Notes: I built this purely for the scheme. I think it looks amazing. I love biplanes in overall white or linen and the snake artwork really sets this one off.

Aircraft: Sopwith One-and-a-Half Strutter

Kit: Toko

Notes: Another pretty one in linen with bright Latvian markings.

Aircraft: Sopwith Pup, RNAS

Kit: Airfix

Notes: I built this in just over 24 h when I had covid and had to isolate. The Airfix kit just falls together like a dream and the aftermarket Novascale decals went down very easily. This is a kit I could happily build again and again.

Aircraft: Sopwith Triplane N500 (Prototype)

Kit: Revell

Notes: This is a nice kit from Revell but the prop, engine, gun and wheels were pretty basic so I replaced them with Roden parts, scratchbuilt a cockpit interior and rebuilt the undercarriage. I had to print my own decals to do the prototype scheme as I liked the all-over linen look.

Aircraft: Sopwith Triplane

Kit: Revell

Notes: After building N500 above, I discovered I had spare decals in a Camel kit for Raymond Collishaw's "Black Maria" from 10 Squadron RNAS. The decals were pretty transferrable to his triplane so I sourced another Revell kit. Basically the same modifications to the kit as above.

Aircraft: Sopwith Camel trainer

Kit: Roden

Notes: I built this for an ANZAC day club theme build. It's the aircraft of Australian (AFC) pilot G F Malley that he used in a flight training school. No particular connection other than I wanted to build a white camel and his was an easy choice. Only modification was the rudder decal that I had to make myself, which was a bit of a pig to get right.

Aircraft: Sopwith Camel 2 seat trainer

Kit: Roden

Notes: It's a Sopwith Camel variant. It's white. Boxes ticked.

Build/display thread: https://uamf.org.uk/viewtopic.php?f=19&t=22502

Aircraft: Sopwith TF.1 Camel Trench Fighter

Kit: Roden

Notes: A prototype that never went anywhere. Designed with two downward firing Lewis guns just for trench strafing. No fuss, straightforward build.

Aircraft: Sopwith Camel "Comic" Night Fighter (Zeppelin hunter)

Kit: Roden

Notes: Out-of-box build. I really liked this particular scheme, though I regret my choice of paint as it is not quite right and it was also a horrible, sticky glossy smear of gunge. Anyway, managed to make the plane halfway decent in the end, despite that.

Aircraft of William "Billy" Barker

Aircraft: Sopwith F.1 Camel B6313

Kit: Roden

Notes: This was the aircraft with the highest number of aerial victories for any individual aircraft of WW1. It went through a number of different schemes. I think this is by far the most interesting of them.

Aircraft: Sopwith 2F.1 Ship's Camel

Kit: Roden

Notes: Built purely for the scheme supplied with the kit. I couldn't pass this up.

Aircraft: Sopwith 2F.1 Ship's Camel

Kit: Roden

Notes: Rotary-engined biplanes look fantastic in natural linen and that's all there is to it...

Aircraft: Sopwith 7F.1 Snipe

Kit: Eastern Express

Notes: Billy Barker fought an epic battle in this Snipe with something like 60 Fokker D.VIIIs and shot down 6....two of those while losing consciousness from loss of blood. He crash landed and survived. Astonishing stuff and a worthy modelling subject. Built out of the box except that I had to scratchbuild a tailfin because the kit doesn't provide the correct one for this aircraft.

Aircraft: Sopwith 5F.1 Dolphin

Kit: KP Models

Notes: An ugly Sopwith.....such things existed, sadly. Less ugly than the Cuckoo and a few others at least. An important aircraft of 1918 and by all accounts a good fighter. Being a Sopwith it needed to join the others.

Allied - French and other

Aircraft: Morane Saulnier N "Bullet"

Kit: Eastern Express

Notes: This is a very ancient build of mine. Bare bones on detail but strong as all get-out. It has survived a lot of knocks being moved from one display area to another. OOB build using the Russian markings provided.

Aircraft: Nieuport 11 "Bebe"

Kit: Eastern Express

Notes: Built in a weekend, which is it's own challenge when rigging is involved. The kit provided Ukrainian markings so I was drawn to those out of novelty value.

Build/display thread: https://uamf.org.uk/viewtopic.php?f=19&t=21022

Aircraft: Nieuport 17

Kit: Eduard

Notes: Built in White Russian (civil war) markings. A bit of a companion build to the Morane.

Build/display thread: https://uamf.org.uk/viewtopic.php?f=19&t=21163

Aircraft: Nieuport Triplane

Kit: KP Models

Notes: Incredibly ungainly-looking experimental triplane. Never entered service. I built this in a blitz. Total build time probably around 8 hours. I was expecting nightmares with the wing alignment but it actually went on more easily than any biplane or triplane I've built.

Build/display thread: https://uamf.org.uk/viewtopic.php?f=480&t=24453

Axis

Aircraft: Albatros W.4 (Late)

Kit: Roden

Notes: Built out of the box. Very challenging kit to put together but persistence paid off.

Build/display thread: https://uamf.org.uk/viewtopic.php?f=19&t=24682

Aircraft: Fokker F.1 Triplane, Werner Voss

Kit: Roden

Notes: Built out of the box. I've always been interested in Voss. A more skilled and more humble pilot than that much over-rated fellow who flew the red one...

Build/display thread: https://uamf.org.uk/viewtopic.php?f=278&t=9908

Aircraft: Fokker DR.1 Triplane, Bruno Loerzer

Kit: Eduard

Notes: Built for a Triplane centenary group build I ran. I liked the scheme of Loerzer with the black and white stripes. The Eduard kit was not the standard I was expecting and I far prefer the Roden kit (above).

Aircraft: Aviatik (Berg) D.1

Kit: Eastern Express

Notes: Built....just because. Challenging construction with the lower wing attachment in particular and the lozenge decal was a trial but came together OK in the end. Wheels are Eduard photoetch spokes with plumbing O-rings.

Build thread: https://uamf.org.uk/viewtopic.php?f=19&t=24108

Aircraft: LFG Roland D.II "Haifisch" (Shark)

Kit: KP Models

Notes: Blitz build. Two afternoons worth of building. Nice little kit with no vices.

Build thread: https://uamf.org.uk/viewtopic.php?f=480&t=24550

Aircraft: Austro-Hungarian PKZ-2

Kit: Roden

Notes: This little oddity was intended to be a replacement for observation balloons, with 3 rotary engines driving the contra-rotating props. It never entered production. The kit was a birthday present from my family and I had it built the same week. Challenging and incredibly fragile build but with patience it came together.
