Cars

All car models are 1/24 unless otherwise stated

I've been owning 1970s 4 cylinders (and rotaries) most of my life since I got my license. Mostly they've been Mazdas or Corollas. Below are models of cars I've owned or would like to have owned....or just generally like the look of or have some family connection to. Also models I've built for my brother who, by massive coincidence, is into 1970s cars too.

Car: Toyota TE27 Corolla Levin

Kit: Fujimi

Notes: I wanted to build a KE20 Corolla, since I would have loved to own one, but a 1/24 kit of that can't be had for love or money so this was the next best thing. The rims are aftermarket resin jobs. In the '90s, every second modified car had these "jelly bean" mags, especially Corollas, so they had to go on this one.

Car: Toyota LB (RA28) "Mustang" Celica

Kit: Aoshima

Notes: Love this Celica. There was one I kept driving past that is now responsible for me succumbing to the urge and buying another old car.... I wanted something funktacular for this one. This is mostly inspired by the paint job on my KE35 Corolla coupe and ended up looking much better than I expected.

Car: Toyota LB (RA28) "Mustang" Celica

Kit: Aoshima

Notes: Same Celica as above but done in a sort of generalised Hot 4s style from the 1990s/early 2000s. Apart from the bumpers and mirrors, all chrome trim was done with Motolow chrome pen. Miracle stuff, that.

Car: Datsun 1600

Kit: Hasegawa

Notes: I never owned a Datto 1600, though my mate had one with an FJ20 turbo. Beast.

I would happily own one and thrash the life out of it on opposite lock ;) along dirt roads. This model represents that car, with dirt all along the guards and sill rust coming through. I tried out plenty of new weathering techniques on this one.

Car: Datsun/Nissan C130 Laurel

Kit: Aoshima

Notes: JDM goodness with an American muscle vibe. I love this car, especially dropped on little wheels. The colour didn't end up being quite as deep as I wanted (I was after a heavy burgundy) but I decided to leave it as it was. Still looks good.

Car: Honda 1300

Kit: Nostalgic Heroes

Notes: Not a car I've owned but they look undeniably cool. I decided to ratrod this. Built in a 24h blitz.

Car: Mitsubishi Galant

Kit: Nostalgic Heroes

Notes: This one I built for my brother. He owned a Galant. Not this model, but this was the closest we were going to get. It was a wierd green-brown-bronze colour which was hellish to mix up and brush paint on.

Car: Mazda RX3 (Savanna)

Kit: Fujimi

Notes: This one represents the RX3 my wife never had.

Car: Mazda 323 Familia BD

Kit: Fujimi

Notes: Built for an 80s theme at the model club, so I milked the 80s-ness for all I could. Cheap white mags....so 80s. Oakley stickers too.

Car: Mazda RX8

Kit: Fujimi

Notes: Built for a 24h blitz build in the colours I would have if I owned an RX8. Like all Fujimis, the kit went together like a dream, which is what you want in a blitz!

Car: Nissan Cube

Kit: Fujimi

Notes: I dig the look of the Cube because it channels 1970s styling. Guard flares were spares from an RX3 kit.

Car: '69 Oldsmobile 442 W-30

Kit: AMT

Notes: I don't mind a bit of muscle car every now and then. This one has crazy-good lines, some of the best I've seen in an American car. The side profile is killer. Built for a "never late in a V8" club theme.

Car: '70 Dodge Challenger

Kit: Revell

Notes: This was a model club group build from an ALDI kit. I decided to go with a rat look, partly because it's something different and also because I can't get a good paint finish on cars anyway....

Car: VW Beetle

Kit: Hasegawa

Notes: Built for a club beetle theme. Who doesn't like a dakdak? Ride height dumped as hard as possible, of course.

Car: Ford Anglia

Kit: Unknown brand - garage industry resin

Notes: Another model built for my brother - our family owned one of these when he was a kid (before my time). All I had was the resin body shell. I had to scratchbuild a chassis, floorpan, interior, bumper bars, windows, etc. Fair effort. The last shot is a mock-up I did with 10-slotter mags, before I put the stock wheels and bumpers on. It looks nuts! Makes me wish I had ordered another one of these body shells...
