Color-Coded Triple Tradition

The Triple Tradition of the Gospels

Color Coded by Michael D. Morrison

Using the NET Bible

The color scheme is patterned after the rainbow, with red text used for Matthew, yellow-green for Mark, blue for Luke, and violet for John. (I skipped yellow because yellow text is difficult to read.) Different colors are used for different combinations of text. For identifying the triple tradition, I was assisted by the work of Mahlon Smith at http://virtualreligion.net/primer/outlines/outlines.html. However, I deleted verses when the verse did not have any content shared with the other two Gospels. Smith used different colors and used the RSV text with some alterations based on the Greek: I have used the NET, with the pericope numbers of Smith.

Colors in the Synoptics are chosen without regard for what John does. However, colors in John follow a similar pattern. If John’s word is shared with Matthew but not Mark or Luke, then it is red. The fact that the word is also in John is indicated by the fact that it is in the fourth column. If the word is shared with Matthew and Mark but not Luke, it is orange, and so forth. I have no doubt made a few mistakes along the way. If you notice any, let me know at m.morrison@gcs.edu.

There are many limits to doing this work, especially in English, since the English translation sometimes uses a different English word even though the same Greek words underlie the text, and sometimes the same English word is used even if different Greek words are original. If the English words are of the same root, but with different form, that is usually indicated by part of the word being one color, and part another (for example: saying and said, or weep and wept).

Words counts of a particular color are unavoidably inconsistent. Counts of orange, for example, do not match between Matthew and Mark. The variation is caused in part by the way that Word moves text, which is the way that I counted the words. If the selected text is in the middle of a word, Word collapses the beginning and end of the original word and makes the moved text a new word, so the word count increases by 1. If the partially shared word is “walk” in Matthew and “walked” in Mark, it will be counted as one word in Matthew but two in Mark. If someone counts the number of shared letters, the result will be more “precise” but not substantially different, since the value of this comparison lies not in an exact number, but in relative amounts. I think we would find a similar result if we used Greek.

Despite the inaccuracies, we still get a visual display of Gospel similarities and differences. Even when all three Evangelists are dealing with the same material, it can be seen that Matthew and Mark are more similar (average 5147 words the same, black + orange) than Mark and Luke (average 4193, green + black). Assuming Marcan priority, this means that Luke altered the text more than Matthew did. This is not surprising, since Luke is a better writer. Luke has more words that are unique to Luke.

4:39 So he got up and rebuked the wind, and said to the sea, “Be quiet! Calm down!” Then the wind stopped, and it was dead calm. 4:40 And he said to them, “Why are you cowardly? Do you still not have faith?”

4:41 They were overwhelmed by fear and said to one another, “Who then is this? Even the wind and sea obey him!”

8:24 They came and woke him, saying,

“Master, Master, we are about to die!”

So he got up and rebuked the wind and the raging waves; they died down, and it was calm. 8:25 Then he said to them, “Where is your faith?”

But they were afraid and amazed, saying to one another, “Who then is this? He commands even the winds and the water, and they obey him!”

When Jesus saw their faith, he said to the paralytic, “Have courage, son! Your sins are forgiven.”

13:19 When anyone hears the word about the kingdom and does not understand it, the evil one comes and snatches what was sown in his heart; this is the seed sown along the path.
