Dr. Syed Amir Al Shahid Rhode, MBBS, MPH, is a physician and epidemiologist whose research focuses on tuberculosis, antimicrobial resistance, antimicrobial stewardship, and infectious-disease research in Bangladesh. He is the Founder and Research Director of the Bangladesh Health Research & Implementation Initiative (BHRI), an independent, nonprofit research initiative.
His work brings clinical practice and epidemiological research together to examine antibiotic use, diagnostic pathways, healthcare decision-making, and health-system performance. He aims to generate evidence that can inform practical, locally relevant improvements in patient care and public health.
At BHRI, Dr. Rhode leads research strategy and contributes across the research process, including study development, protocol and instrument design, field implementation, standardisation, quality assurance, quantitative analysis, interpretation, and scientific reporting. He also provides methodological guidance and mentorship to researchers and students and contributes to research governance.
Dr. Rhode directly supervises 7 research personnel and 21 students through research activities, methodological guidance, and academic support.

Role: Principal Investigator
Short description: A community-based cross-sectional study of 400 adults with recent antibiotic use in Narayanganj Sadar. The study examined antibiotic self-medication and associated factors to inform community-level antimicrobial stewardship.

Role: Principal Investigator
Short description: A community-based cross-sectional study of 400 adults recruited across four geographical area types in Narayanganj, Bangladesh. The study assessed antibiotic self-medication and the appropriateness of antibiotic use, with clinical appropriateness evaluated through independent physician adjudication.
Role: Principal Investigator
Short description: A multiregional cross-sectional study involving 1,600 adults across four geographical area types in four regions of Bangladesh. The study examined antibiotic self-medication, inappropriate antibiotic use, and regional variation to inform locally tailored stewardship approaches.
Role: Principal Investigator
Short description: A stratified, cluster-sampled cross-sectional study involving 2,000 adults across four geographical area types in five regions of Bangladesh. The study examined behavioural patterns and factors associated with antibiotic self-medication to inform targeted public-health interventions.
Role: Principal Investigator
Short description: A multiregional simulated-client study involving approximately 2,400 encounters at community drug outlets in five study locations. Using three standardised clinical scenarios and a three-stage escalation protocol, the study assessed antibiotic dispensing, diagnostic decision-making, and referral behaviour.
Role: Principal Investigator
Short description: A nationwide prospective study designed to enrol 5,000 adults undergoing pulmonary tuberculosis testing across Bangladesh. It uses a standardised pre-test symptom assessment and sputum Xpert MTB/RIF testing to estimate the burden of asymptomatic pulmonary tuberculosis and examine the limits of symptom-based screening.
Role: Second Investigator
Short description: A cross-sectional study of mental well-being among patients preparing to undergo breast cancer surgery. Using the WHO-5 Well-Being Index, the study examines preoperative well-being and associated factors to help inform patient-centred supportive care.
