BGMUN is a model of the United Nations. For 4 days students from Beatriz Galindo and from other schools in Madrid, as well as international schools, debate on different topics until they reach a common agreement.
How does it work?:
BGMUN is divided into several committees: 2 in French, 1 in Spanish and the rest in English. Each committee is specialized in a topic.
Example: security committee, politics committee, economy committee, etc.
Each committee has its main topic but also has other more specific sub-topics to focus on during the debate. People who have the role of debating are called delegates, each delegate represents a country, their job is to defend the position and ideology of their corresponding country by making a resolution for each sub-topic.
Example: I am a delegate representing Russia, I am from the women's rights committee, I have 2 subtopics (abortion and gender violence). So I have to look for information on the internet about what position Russia takes regarding abortion and gender violence. Then I write 1 resolution for each subtopic.
By the time the 4 days of BGMUN begin, these resolutions must be written and corrected by your corresponding chair. Throughout these 4 days, delegates will debate in their committees to reach a common resolution among all the countries. Those resolutions will be presented at the closing ceremony.
During the debates there are what are called “motions”, they are tools that both delegates and chairs can use during the debates. You can find these motions in the motions section of the BGMUN website.
Of all the committees the most important is the G8. In this committee there are only 8 delegates who represent the most influential countries, that's where the name comes from. Instead of having one topic or two that they have to debate, they have to debate all the topics in all the committees represented in the BGMUN (we don’t always have time to talk about all of them but that’s the goal). This may at first seem like a tremendous job to prepare but other people from other committees who represent the same country as you will help you with the resolutions.
Here the debate is the most interesting of the entire MUN. Many different topics are talked about and it is a lot of fun to represent your country and make agreements with others.
We hope you have fun!
