The mythical bird was first drawn up in fall of 1983 by William Arnsdorf, the Bookstore Manager. He was searching for a way to increase sales and decided to give the school merchandise his own mascot. The revenue made was for Student Senate to pay for student activities.
Arnsdorf’s version of the Blugold, as seen above, is a hawk looking bird with horns. This was the first sighting of the bird we recognize today.
In the summer of 2006, a UWEC student took matters into his own hands and began plans to create a mascot. Casey Driscoll crafted a bird suit in the basement of Sutherland Hall and Chip E. Wa was born. Student Senate partnered with this mythical bird to start “Momentum Monday". It was this partnership that began the trek to give University of Wisconsin−Eau Claire a mascot.
Driscoll brought the student body together under the one goal of getting the mythical bird to be the mascot of University of Wisconsin−Eau Claire.
With help from Student Senate, and his persistence, a similar bird became the mascot of the student body before he graduated in 2012.
