My future mentor
As an emerging counselor, it is essential to understand the similarities and differences between mentorship and supervision. One similarity they share is the support provided to a counselor in training. In both roles, they provide honest feedback and the chance for the counselor in training to reflect and be challenged (Mentoring, n.d.). Another similarity is providing help and support to the counselor-in-training to understand and learn areas that reflect growth. One distinct difference is that the support provided as a mentorship focuses on different tasks. Mentorship focuses on various tasks such as encouraging the pursuit of professional development activities, goal-setting, networking, and career exploration (Mentoring, n.d.). A supervisor oversees various tasks in focusing on whether the counselor is learning by performance.
Characteristics and skills are important for selecting a professional mentor. One skill that is important to consider is the experience and professional background of a counselor. Understanding a mentor's experience and professional background can help to develop a supportive professional relationship that aligns with what a counselor in training is working on achieving (Smoore, 2023). A mentorship style is also important to consider when learning new methods that a counselor in training can adapt and be successful long term. These skills also play an important role in addressing challenges that a counselor in training can develop. Selecting a mentor that have similar characteristics is helpful in having a distinct viewpoint, encouraging you to think creatively and from a different perspective (Smoore, 2023). Similar characteristics can help a mentor offer insightful criticism that will help you advance your abilities and output (Smoore, 2023).
Developing smart goals can help to identify a mentor who aligns with a similar professional identity. The first SMART goal is I will work on learning three new skills related to my career objectives with the mentor's help to effectively lead a PHP group by using the DBT curriculum over the next 3 weeks. Another goal that I would like to focus on is to enhance my professional approach. I will make it a habit to proactively seek out and politely accept constructive criticism from my mentor over the course of the following three months to develop confidence in providing psychoeducation for client’s in a group setting.
