I continue to learn by working with diverse clients and embracing the changes that emerge through their willingness to engage in the therapeutic process. Adopting a safe environment for clients is essential to developing a therapeutic relationship that reflects a nonjudgmental space. As a developing counselor is necessary to provide care that is ethical. Developing awareness of our own attitude, beliefs, and behaviors can help be recognized client needs and consider their own behaviors and beliefs. I continue to apply this by having the commitment to avoid the imposition of my own personal values and beliefs. Guided by the ACA Code of Ethics, I remain aware of my own attitudes, values, and beliefs so that I can recognize and prevent any potential value imposition. I continue to utilize supervision to understand ways to manage complex cases and determine the best approach. Utilizing a centered client approach, I continue to honor the client’s decisions in treatment and care. Other areas that are important for a counselor in training to consider is the importance to gather data to support the client during the therapeutic process. Lastly, it is important to discuss limitations with clients. Understanding how limitations play a role in the therapeutic relationship can foster a safe space to address issues and challenges.
