Reflecting on every disposition throughout this program, I can acknowledge there has been growth in different areas, and I continue to learn. Empathy is a value that has been significant not only in building therapeutic relationships but also in creating an environment that is safe. Using Kolberg's Six Stages not only reflects on different stages a person can experience but also helps to understand behaviors and thoughts associated with each stage. Using empathy can help to respect grief espression thoroughout stages and avoid pathologizing grief in a certain manner. It can help to navigate my own personal reaction and avoid implementing my own values. Empathy helps to develop compassion. I believe that empathy can help the client identify a better response to manage different stages of grief. Understanding how culture plays a role in managing grief is essential to consider when helping clients. Having awareness can help to set boundaries with the client to help the therapeutic relationship. Upholding the ethical obligation as a counselor in training is important as my goal is to help client navigate their need and avoid doing any harm to clients.
