BPC 2026 Spring Leauge
Rules Update 03/31/31
Spectator Noise and Conduct
According to the 2026 USA Pickleball rules, spectators cannot make excessive, distracting, or disruptive noise during a match, even between points. While cheering is permitted, the 2026 rules have tightened restrictions on spectator conduct to ensure the integrity of the game, making the distinction between reasonable encouragement and excessive disruption clearer.
In summary, spectators are meant to be observers, not active participants. Excessive noise that disrupts the flow of the match is a violation of the 2026 conduct standards .
Key 2026 Rules on Spectator Noise & Conduct:
Excessive Noise is a Distraction: The rules define distractions as any loud noise or physical action that interferes with a player's concentration, which is prohibited, particularly as players prepare for the next point.
Mandatory "Must Not" Rule: The 2026 rules changed the language regarding spectator involvement from "should not" to a mandatory "must not," meaning players cannot consult spectators on calls, and spectators should not influence the game via noise or commentary.
Referee/Tournament Director Authority: In officiated matches, a referee can warn or penalize a player if their fans are disruptive. In unofficiated matches, spectators whose noise is disruptive or disrespectful can be asked to leave by a tournament director.
Cheering vs. Distraction: Cheering in between points is generally accepted, but it must not be "excessive" or designed to rattle opponents or interfere with the server calling the score.
Coaching Limits: Coaching is only allowed during time-outs or between games. Spectators cannot yell instructions or make excessive noise to interrupt the flow of play.
