2024 Deacon Francis Chao and Father John Hines Memorial Scholarship

 

The Deacon Francis Chao and Father John Hines Memorial Scholarship (hereafter the Scholarship) is established to recognize outstanding students who have proven initiative in giving their time to serve the St James the Greater Parish (SJ) while maintaining an excellent academic standard. We welcome all parishioners to nominate any potential candidate for this award. To apply for this scholarship, candidate must satisfy the following:

 

Scholarship Award: Each year, the committee can award up to $1500 after reviewing qualifying applicant(s). The below guideline is to ensure we award qualifying applicants if multiple awardees is presented to the committee:

 

Award Review Process The Scholarship Committee uses the following criteria to evaluate scholarship candidates:

A scholarship committee will contact your SJ referee, and you may be contacted for a brief interview, if required.

Deacon Francis Chao was born on September 18, 1938.  He and his wife Johanna came to Boston in 1964.  In 1977, he entered the 3rd class of the Permanent Deacon of the Archdiocese.  He was ordained in May 26, 1979, the first Deacon of Chinese descent in Boston who responded to God's call.  Deacon Chao was very active in our faith community, putting his love in action.  Deacon Chao returned to the Lord on January 26, 1994 at the age of 56 after a long illness of cancer.

Father John Hines was born on October 18, 1949 and was a native of Lynn, Massachusetts.  He joined the Maryknoll Missionary Order and was ordained a priest on May 20, 1978.  He received language, formation and other training in Taiwan and Hong Kong.  He was proficient in many languages and Chinese dialects.  He had a great sense of humor and was fond of telling great stories that touched our hearts.  He served many years in parishes in Hong Kong as Assistant Pastor and Pastor.  BCCC was fortunate to have him serve as our Spiritual Director from 1990-1992.  He was instrumental in working with the Archdiocese in converting the Maryknoll Sisters Center into the Boston Chinese Catholic Pastoral Center.  Dedication of the Center was administered by Auxiliary Bishop John Boles in September 1992.  Fr. Hines returned to the Lord on September 5, 1994 at the age of 45 when he suffered a heart attack in Hong Kong.
