The adoption of dogs and cats is not just a compassionate act but also a practical solution to combatting the issues of stray populations and overcrowded shelters. By adopting rather than buying pets, individuals provide loving homes to animals in need, giving them a second chance at a happy life. This act also alleviates the burden on animal shelters and rescue organizations, allowing them to rescue more animals and provide better care. Additionally, adopting dogs and cats promotes responsible pet ownership. It also helps reduce the demand for breeding and supports efforts to curb overpopulation. Ultimately, adoption is a powerful way for individuals to make a positive impact on animal welfare, contributing to healthier, happier communities for both humans and animals alike.
Kannury, also known as Maggie, found himself abandoned outside Subansiri girls hostel just before the onset of Covid in late 2019 or early 2020, when he was merely 9 or 10 months old. Initially timid and unable to integrate with the other dogs here, he sought refuge inside the hostel building, which he considered his home. Despite being vaccinated and neutered, Kannury remained fearful of venturing outside due to repeated attacks from the resident pack in the portico area. He's a gentle and chubby crossbreed, fluent in multiple languages and with a love for music. Kannury endeared himself to the hostel community, especially the girls who pamper him with their care and food offerings. However, with the hostel at full capacity complaints increased, the authorities reluctantly issued an ultimatum to remove him. Efforts to rehome him have was stymied by his adult age and breed, as well as the reluctance of shelters to take in a healthy dog. Despite challenges, the hostel community stood steadfast in their refusal to consider euthanasia, hoping against hope to find a solution that ensures Kannury's safety and well-being.
After facing uncertainty and the threat of being displaced from the hostel, Kannury's fortunes took a turn for the better. He was temporarily moved to the inpatient unit in Khanapara A block for approximately 2 months. During this time, fate smiled upon him when Amrita, a senior PhD scholar from the Mechanical department, stepped in to offer him a forever home. Since being adopted by Amrita, Kannury has blossomed, experiencing the joy and security of a loving household. Now, he thrives in his newfound happiness, cherished by his adoptive family and living a life filled with comfort and care.

Googly's present dad, a Ph.D. scholar residing in Married Scholar at the time, came across her one day during a visit to Disang and decided to bring her home as a surprise. His mom was overjoyed by the unexpected addition to their family but struggled to contain her happiness. Initially, Googly wasn't comfortable with them and made her displeasure known whenever they tried to cuddle her, showing a strong desire to return to her mother. They eventually decided it best not to keep her, but shortly thereafter, during parvo season, Googly fell ill and required treatment from Dr. Borah for five days, including saline therapy. Upon her recovery, they returned her to Disang, where she seemed content to be back at her birthplace, almost ignoring them in her happiness. Despite their separation, Googly's dad visited her regularly, and she appeared happy until she fell seriously ill again due to parvo. Sensing her sickness this time, they took her back for treatment, and after a week under Dr. Borah's care, her health started to decline rapidly. Dr. Borah suggested they keep her with them for better care, and from then on, Googly's behavior underwent a dramatic change, becoming much more friendly, though still hesitant about being cuddled. Unfortunately, she fell ill again shortly afterward and struggled to stand on her own, leading Dr. Borah to suspect canine distemper (CD). That day, overwhelmed with sadness, they questioned why fate had brought Googly back to them only to suffer. Nevertheless, Dr. Borah's medications proved effective, and Googly gradually regained her health. Since then, she has become a cherished and inseparable part of their family. Trained by her parents, Googly has thrived, and after one year and three months, they relocated from Guwahati to Kolkata, where she continues to thrive and bring joy to their lives. All volunteers at AWC IIT Guwahati are delighted with Googly's progress, and she even has a Facebook page for updates on her happy life in her forever home.
Senimai(meaning sweet tooth), waltzed into our lives on October 14, 2022, just as my husband and I were starting a new chapter at IIT Guwahati. When we first laid eyes on her, she was a muddy mess with a nose as black as coal. Naturally, we couldn't resist taking her in as our own little bundle of joy. This little fur tornado is a blessing in disguise, and we love her like she's our own child. She's the epitome of cuteness wrapped in a layer of mischief. She is absolutely high-maintenance with her gourmet meat preferences, and oh-so-picky about her fish—only local catch will do for our princess. And her sweet tooth? It's legendary. Chocolate, ice cream, jalebi—you name it, she loves it. She's my stress-buster and my favorite hugging pillow, a permanent and beloved member of our family. Life with Senimai is nothing short of delightful chaos, and we wouldn't have it any other way.
Her daughter was adopted by Sushmita Rabha. They stay in Goalpara. And then her daughter gave birth to two more kittens.
