As of Fall 2023, I have been immersed in the world of Sports Journalism. I didn't have much interest in sports before but journalism has brought a new interest to me. I faced many challenges when creating Sports Media because sports contains fast paced action. The work I created has proved to furthter my growth in my journalism career.
Making this story was very important to me because it taught me to handle sensitive topics with truth, yet empathy. See how this Tupelo Coach pushes through a difficult time.
This story was one of the most challenging stories I have done as a student journalist. While producing this story, I had no prior knowledge of football and how to make this story very well rounded. I was not able to get my own footage of Tristan Jernigan, so I went through 200 clips in order to have video. All the hard work paid off because it became a finalist for Best of Show Sports Story at MSPA.
I was very enthusiastic to make the sports intro for WTHS as well. I love the edit my action to the beat, which is evident here in the video. I had to sort through all the clips to make sure that every sports program at THS was represented.
Jumbotron Management
Through WTHS, I got a chance to operate the jumbotron camera for Tupelo High School's varsity football season. This volunteer opportunity allowed me to have practice using a camera while shooting video with a lot of action. Even though I wasn't familliar with the rules of football, I was thankful to further my skills with my camera work.
Getting into the world of sports writng has helped me grow as a student journalist. With this script, I struggled with writing a cohevise story while remaining factual. I wanted make sure I left the emotional aspect to the interviewees while staying conversational. In spite of the challenges, I was proud of this script that wrote with short time.
