Hello, my name is Awa. I am Senegalese American and I come from a second generation immigrant family. I moved from Dakar, Senegal to Tupelo, Mississippi and been living here ever since. I am currently a Senior at Tupelo High School and have been apart of WTHS for four semesters. Journalism has impacted me greatly because it has allowed me to branch out and gain many new experiences. I consider myself hardworking, dedicated, and passionate about the work that I do. I am Executive Producer for WTHS. I am also apart of student organizations DECA and FBLA. For my senior year, I have joined Student Council as well as National Honor Society. I have been apart of Tupelo Golden Wave Orchestra since 2018. My favorite part of journalism is getting to connect with people and sharing untold stories. I love editing videos and putting together pieces to create something new.
The Friendships
Journalism has not only taught me many life skills, it has also brought an amazing group of people in my life. I have gained so my new friendships through WTHS that have made my expericene more enjoyable.
One of my biggest supporters of my journalistic journey is my advisor, Katrina Ivy. She has taught me so much since the beginning of 2023. She has been there for me countless times by expanding my ideas, teaching me new journalistic skills, and creating an inviting environment. When I started WTHS I had one goal in mind, to be more connected to the world around me though storytelling. With Mrs. Ivy, I was given a chance to learn about my community and how to make a difference with journalism. I am eternally grateful to have her support as a young journalist.

My journalism career started with WTHS in January 2023. My interest in journalism came from wanting to learn about the different types of individuals of my school and community of Tupelo. In the beginning, I was a shy person who wasn't an active member of my community. With Journalism, I became an productive community member who was shedding light on events happening aorund me. Although I have been a student journalist for one year, I have seen tremendous growth in myself with wrting, editing, interviwing, and producing a news show. My motivation for my hard work as a journalist stems from wanting to make a difference by helping people be aware of the world around them. I am thankful to have journalism as an outlit and I hope my dedication to this field reflects in my work.
