Purpose of Education
I believe the purpose of education is to teach students the knowledge and skills to help them become successful members of society. It is important for a student to acquire the basic skills and knowledge because they will use them in further education and the workforce. The purpose of education translates to English education because English allows for students to communicate and build good relationships with their peers, teachers, and parents. This can help students score a job or even help them communicate in society. I choose English education because as a teacher I want to serve my students by listening, coaching, and mentoring. I want to help my students and provide them with resources so that they can be successful in life. I believe each student deserves an equal chance in the world.
The Role of the Teacher
I will enact my philosophy of education by creating an all-inclusive environment in which will bring students together in common goals. I will structure my reading assignments to allow students to collaborate in groups so they can have meaningful discussions without being judged. In a classroom, it is important for a student to feel comfortable in which they will effectively learn the knowledge and skills to be successful.
In my classroom, students can expect me to be relatable and involved in their lives. I will encourage them to be creative, but I am also going to support them as they take a challenge in academics. I will support my students with resources to foster their growth and education. My students should expect me to use a variety of teaching styles so they can have the opportunity to see which style is most effective for them.
In order to grow and further develop as a teacher, I plan to coach so I can learn how I can better engage with my students and create a more inclusive environment. I also plan on sponsoring clubs to help students become involved and dedicated to their school. In the future, I plan to return to school so that I can further my education to eventually move up into administration.
The Role of the Student
I expect my students to come prepared to class with readiness to learn so that they are effectively understanding the instruction daily. In an all-inclusive classroom environment, I will expect my students to be kind to others and respect their peers when help is needed. If a student needs help, I expect them to come to me for help so I can provide them with support. If they do not actively seek support, I will check in with students weekly after checking grades.
My students will know what to expect from the beginning of the school year because I will create a syllabus that will outline the course expectations and rules. The purpose of my syllabus will be to provide a solid beginning to the school year. I will also have a class website in which will provide information and updates. Both resources set a tone and a provide a conceptual framework for the semester. I will expect my students to return their syllabus signed including a parent/guardian signature as it will be used as a resource that is referred to over the semester. I will update parents through email often.
My goal for my students is to leave my classroom with experiences that will provide them with a positive outlook on English. Ultimately, I want my students to leave my class to be more engaged in English and the people around them.
