overview of on-campus facilities & equipment (for UM students)
Location: Central Campus (MLB or Mason Hall)
Services: Equipment loan
Contact: 734.615.0100 / LSATechnologyServices@umich.edu
How To Use:
LSA has an array of Zoom H4n audio recorders and mics, typically available to loan for 3 days at a time - you are not required to use them, but spending some time tinkering with this equipment is highly recommended as you begin working on your final audio project. The staff onsite can also advise on what you might need if you're not sure! You can call them, or show up in person during opening hours, describe your needs and get tailored recommendations.
Click here to see their entire catalog *, or go straight to the audio equipment section here * (audio recorders and mics)
Call ahead or submit a ticket * to reserve equipment for pickup (recommended, though walk-in reservations are possible pending availability, check opening hours at the link above)
*If you get an error message when clicking these links, log into your UMich account in your browser by accessing a UM service like email or Wolverine Access, then try again.
Duderstadt Center (aka The Dude)
Location: North Campus
Services: Equipment Loan, on-site production studios, support staff
Contact: Ryan N. Wilcox, inlerabt@umich.edu / Tom Bray, tbray@umich.edu
How To Use:
You will most likely find the Dude most useful for on-site recording and editing facilities, and its knowledgeable staff. You will receive an introduction to these facilities and people in class, but you're encouraged to return on your own time as you start to focus on your final audio project.
Click here for more info about Groundworks, a walk-in, self-service media lab in the building that has hardware and software for audio, video, animation and fabrication projects.
Click here for Groundworks Virtual Orientation (via Canvas)
Location: Central Campus, inside the undergrad library
Services: Equipment Loan, on-site production studios, support staff (though a bit less extensive than Duderstadt, the staff are every bit as knowledgeable and some of you may actually find the smaller scale more approachable, and its location on central campus more convenient)
Contact: Justin Schell, shapirodesignlab@umich.edu
How To Use:
You will receive an introduction to the facilities and staff in class, but you are also encouraged to return on your own time as you start to focus on your final audio project.
