The Senate

About the Senate

The ASUP Senate is a body of students who represent every full-time undergraduate at the University of Portland. The Senate is the legislative body of the student government and is made up of elected representatives from each class, school or college, and type of residency constituency. Students who wish to become members of the Senate should contact the Vice President to determine procedure and qualifications. The Senate meets on a weekly basis to discuss issues and make decisions that affect all students. The meetings provide an important forum for student involvement and are open the public. Students who do not have the time or missed the opportunity to join Senate but still want to get involved in the leadership of the Student Government should contact The Speaker of the Senate. There is always room for active leadership in ASUP in many different areas of concern and interest. Senate meetings occur every Monday at 4:30 PM in Shiley 301.

ASUP Senate Mission Statement

ASUP serves and represents all UP students by actively seeking opinions and encouraging participation. As leaders, it is our privilege and responsibility to foster community – based upon justice, integrity, and respect. Through transparency, professional communication, and proactive involvement, we hope to strengthen the current UP community as well as build a foundation for future generations.  ASUP also encourages and values respectful discourse where we uphold compassion, decorum, dignity, collaboration, and accountability to best serve our constituents. All elected officials and visitors will receive that same respect.

ASUP actively works as one to advocate for and serve the student body at the University of Portland.

Senate Qualifications

Our Mentor Program for New Senators

Our mentor program is put in place to help the first-year and new senators class transition smoothly into the Senate and provide them with a friend and guide who is looking out for them. The ASUP senate can be overwhelming and confusing to someone who is unfamiliar with the way the Senate is organized.

These mentors must have served at least one semester on ASUP. They are requited to have a minimum of three meetings with their mentees within the first semester. Duties of the mentor may include, but are not limited to, explaining the expectations of being a senator, how office hours work, the language of the senate, constituency reports, committees, and being an available resource for them. At the end of the mentorship, the Speaker of the Senate collects a survey from the mentees. This will be used as feedback to improve the program for the next year.
