Fall 2022 Committee Recap!

Kianna Storm, Director of Communications

The Associated Students of the University of Portland (ASUP) is the student government that seeks to serve the student body by representing the needs and interests of students.  One of the main ways that ASUP accomplishes this goal is through committee work.  Joining an ASUP committee is a great way to get involved on campus and work on projects that positively impact students.

ASUP has five standing committees: Academic Affairs, Communications, Diversity and Social Responsibility (DSR), Infrastructure, and Student Affairs.  These committees, composed of senators and non-elected students, work on projects and tasks each semester to address student needs and foster a better environment on campus.  We hope to share the work these committees are doing to provide more transparency about the workings of ASUP and encourage students to get more involved on campus.

Last semester, the Academic Affairs committee had a productive semester in their work to prioritize advertising resources that students can use to assist with registration, promote mental health awareness, and encourage mentorship opportunities for first-year and transfer students.  This spring the committee is continuing to work on making mental health resources more accessible on campus.  As well as promoting ways students can improve their learning experience.

The Communications committee worked to gain a greater footing on the needs of UP students from ASUP. We have facilitated a few collaborations including a collaboration with the Wellness Center and Beauchamp.  This semester the communications committee is working on creating more student-facing events, the most exciting being the end-of-the-year flea market as well as some other exciting collaborations.

Diversity and Social Responsibility accomplished a big goal of working with intramural sports to make them more inclusive.  They did this by meeting with Brian Dezzani (Director of Recreational Services) who was able to communicate with his Intramural Coordinators and rebrand some of the teams to include inclusive language so that it is clear teams are open to everyone.  This semester DSR is working with Residence Life to create more inclusive environments in the dorms.

The Infrastructure committee also put in a lot of work to create more gender-neutral bathrooms on campus in various dorms and academic buildings.  They also worked to ensure that the new Shiley-Marcos center will have gender-neutral bathrooms on each floor.  This committee has and continues to work with Facilities Services to advocate for the needs of students whether it be fixing things around campus, checking on work orders, etc.

Finally, the Student Affairs committee collaborated with the Moreau Center for the Thanksgiving basket drive and worked with athletics to promote the playoff soccer game.  This semester Student Affairs is planning a St. Patrick's Day event for off-campus students and putting on a student leadership mixer to increase collaboration and build more community.

If you are interested in joining a committee or want more information about any of the work they are doing please email the Speaker of the Senate, Angela Wipfler, at wipfler23@up.edu.  For any general questions about ASUP feel free to dm us on Instagram @asuportland or email asup@up.edu.
