Assessment:
The teacher understands and uses multiple methods of assessment to engage learners in their own growth, to monitor learner progress, and to guide the teacher’s and learner’s decision making.
Describe artifact that was used as the example for the standard
Running records are a type of reading assessment given to students. They are used to collect information on readers such as their fluency, accuracy, and comprehension which in turn tells you their reading level. It captures how well a student reads and their reading behaviors. They provide a teacher with the opportunity to analyze what is happening as they read. These assessments are done initially as a baseline and then are continually done throughout the year to show progress in students reading abilities.
Give a rationale on why this artifact is appropriate
This assessment is appropriate because it gives vital information on a student and their reading abilities which in turn help the teacher put them in the right reading groups and allows them to determine the “just right” texts the students should be reading. Second graders are really just learning to use their knowledge of the English language, grammar, and visual cues to read. These running records provide teachers a way to observe how they are “attacking” or approaching the text they read.
