Course Description:
Students learn practical application and active learning in lecture content. Designated as a Civically Engaged Learning class. At least 15 hours will be spent in civic engaged learning experiences.
Learning Objectives:
Identify how to utilize and apply an occupational therapy frame of reference when learning to evaluate and contribute to treatment planning of an individual with physical dysfunction.
Demonstrate proficiency in treatment techniques and compensatory/remedial strategies for various diagnoses.
Demonstrate training in techniques to enhance functional mobility, including physical transfers, wheelchair management, and mobility devices.
Demonstrate competency in development, remediation, and compensation for varying body functions outlined in the Occupational Therapy Practice Framework.
Demonstrate safe and effective administration of superficial thermal and mechanical modalities to achieve established goals while adhering to contraindications and precautions.
Interview an individual with a disability and complete a written occupational performance assessment.
Accurately record treatment sessions content.
Use measures and quantitative standards such as numbers of repetitions, variation of size, time measurements et al with documentation.
Develop and document a thorough treatment plan based upon an accurate analysis of a patient’s history, current level of function, and goals.
Analyze activity into logical components that will adjust to the therapeutic needs of patients.
Facilitate discharge planning by reviewing the needs of the client, caregiver, family, and significant others; available resources; and discharge environment, and identify those needs to the occupational therapist, client, and others involved in discharge planning.
Promote the use of appropriate home and community programming to support performance in the client's natural environment and participation in all contexts relevant to the client by creating a home exercise program (HEP).
Recommend to the occupational therapist the need for termination of occupational therapy services when stated outcomes have been achieved or it has been determined that they cannot be achieved. Assist with developing a summary of occupational therapy outcomes, recommendations, and referrals.
Articulate various services for the disabled that exist within our community.
Complete clinic rotations for service learning.
Participate in a joint project with PTA students.
Describe and discuss an environment that assures personal safety, comfort and dignity of the patient during the screening, evaluation and treatment process.
Demonstrate appropriate interpersonal skills during coursework and lab practical exams.
Demonstrate the ability to teach and use motivation skills with a client in order to learn a skill.
Utilize word processing skills to complete written communication in a brief, accurate and effective manner.
