Course Description:
The course helps students develop a familiarity with wheelchair usage and various types of adaptive equipment/appliances; use of an industrial sewing machine to fabricate patient supplies/splints; role-playing and teaching strategies, techniques for treatment in activities of daily living and instrumental activities of daily living; functional transfers, and cognitive assessment.

In this class, we learned all about wheelchairs and how to use them. We practiced everything from how to measure for a custom wheelchair, to how to take a wheelchair apart and put it back together, to living life wheel-chair bound for 24 hours. I learned that being in a wheelchair comes with its challenges, but it does not define a person’s worth or capabilities. I have so much respect for individuals who live their lives everyday in a wheelchair. This project taught me about embracing inclusivity and advocating for accessibility. I believe that together, as future certified occupational therapy assistants, we can create a more inclusive and supportive community for everyone.
