This course was taken the first year I attended the University of Cincinnati Blue Ash to learn more about what it means to be an honors student. In this class we reflected on our personalities by taking a Clifton strengths test which highlighted what traits were our strengths. When bringing these traits to light we could better plan for our future careers. It also helped us to understand ourselves better so that we could apply ourselves in a more beneficial way to group projects. We also discussed the mistakes we made that semester to acknowledge where we faulted and to learn from them so that we would not make the same mistakes in the future. In this course we had guest speakers who instructed interactive activities that helped our class to recognize that people have different backgrounds and experiences that have shaped who they are today. Another thing we did in this course was plan out how we would complete our two experiences in the future. Although throughout my two years at Blue Ash my plans changed from my initial path, I still was able to complete the program. Below is the plan I had created in 2018. Overall, this class helped me to understand what being an honor student meant, it taught me a lot about myself and others, and helped me to make friends at a commuting college.
Honors Plan 2018:
Throughout this first semester as an honors college student I have learned a lot about myself. I am not good at writing papers, but I can complete assignments on time. Within my schoolwork I have trouble concentrating for long periods. This makes studying and completing assignments difficult because I must break my time up to conquer a task. I also have figured out that college is something I really enjoy. I have met a lot of people here and have learned more through these classes than high school classes. I like how there is not busy work and there is more flexibility within my schedule. Within the honors class I learned how to finish assignments without having an outline or questions to ask the teacher. Since the class was only an hour once a week the assignments would be posted online and without examples. This allowed me to grow as a student by not having the teacher over my shoulder helping me all the time. Also, most of the assignments were reflections, so based off personal experiences and opinions rather than fact. This was a new way of writing for me and it allowed more freedom to my responses. This acquired knowledge will help me within my future goals.
For the next year I want to accomplish a lot of things. To start off, I want to volunteer for environmental conscious groups to learn more about how we can save the planet and make a difference within my time. I also want to keep my grades at a high level through harder courses next semester. For my second experience for the honors course, I will be striving toward study abroad in 2020. I want to travel out of the country for the first time and I also want to learn about how cities and buildings affect the environment. After I graduate, I want to have a career that can be online but also involved within the environment. I would love to have a blog and YouTube channel that expresses my concern and spreads awareness about the issues within the environment. By the time I graduate college I want to be married, have a van converted, and have an online job that allows me to travel. These are all goals that will broaden my knowledge and personal growth. To be able to accomplish these within two to four years I will need to start striving towards them now.
I will start by planning out my days within college so that I am more productive and can stay focused on what my future goals are. For my summer full of volunteering I need to research what institutions I want to be a part of and how many I can contribute to. After I have researched, I will need to get in contact with someone inside that institution and make my place in their program concrete. For my study abroad trip I will need to start saving money. I could create a product that I can sell to create revenue, or I could stop eating out to save money for my trip. I will also learn more about how to get accepted into the study abroad program and what credits I need to be a part of the project. To keep my grades at a high level I will plan out my time so that I do not fall behind on work. I will also create a study group so that I am held accountable for spending time studying. My plan for finding a career that will suit my needs and wants will be to get to know the people I volunteer with. If they choose to spend their time helping the environment through volunteer work, they could be a part of an environmentally conscious work force. By getting to know these people I can learn how to get involved in a career that I will be happy to work at.
Through the UCBA honors program I can complete two goals, volunteering and study abroad. The honors program helped me learn how to reflect on experiences and create organized portfolios. With this knowledge I can keep a record of the things I have learned while volunteering, so I can use these details for future job opportunities. I can also use this reflection process for my study abroad experience. This will allow me to squeeze out all the information that I soaked up while in a different country. To be involved in the honors program you must complete two experiences and I chose for those the be volunteering and study abroad. Within these experiences I can meet new people, see new places, and grow personally. While meeting these people I can create a gateway into what could become my career. Through the honors program I can grow tremendously.
