A Fish in the Sea

By ma_star (Finland)() Write the World

I rattle my tail and shoot forward, swishing between the towers of kelp. My tiny fins help me steer past the trash floating around me, pieces of plastic with different shapes and colours. They are beautiful, despite their dangerous nature. They compel the life of the sea to eat them, leaving fish and mammals alike to starve to death as the bright pieces fill their bellies. The plastic is endless; every piece has a twin to take its place.

The faint light of the moon bounces of my scales brightening up my solitude. The sea is completely silent beside a whale's thundering song in the distance. I would like to think of myself as laconic, but even I feel an urge to talk about this place for all eternity, describe every corner of this ocean and its wonders. It is a shame that such a beautiful place is being destroyed by the greedy creatures living beyond the surface. They are sabotaging my home with their senseless actions. Fools. We are not the only ones dependant on our waters. We give our lives to feed those creatures. We give them energy, a way of transport. We carry their boats, we fill their markets. Without us they would perish. And still they are destroying us. Killing us. I do not understand. Why would you destroy something that benefits you? You do not burn the cow that gives you milk. You do not shoot the hen that gives you eggs. It is simple, and yet those creatures fail to understand. They choose what is easier, may it be sustainable or not. I might be but a small fish but even I can see their doom.

But it is still to early to abdicate. There is still time left. I hope they can change. Because the plastic might be beautiful but it kills the ocean. It destroys our home. It ruins our waters.
