By Éirinn Ryan (Ireland)() Write the World

"Instead of controlling the environment or the benefit of the population, perhaps it is time we control the population for the survival of the environment."

Words were spoken by the great Sir David Attenborough, a huge inspiration to anyone who loves animals, learning more about the world or maybe just listening to his voice. Listening. It's funny, because people seem to be listening to this wise man, but not hearing the message of his speech. It is one thing to say you want to help the environment and the horrendous conditions we have put it in, however it is a whole other story to actually do anything to help.

Recycling for example. Every home in Ireland has a green bin, as should every home, place of recreation, business, any kind of amenity... right? So why is it then, that plastic has been found at the bottom of the Pacific Ocean's Mariana Trench, 36,000 feet deep? Why is it that in 2017 scientists discovered a Goose-beaked whale washed up on the coast of Norway with not 1 or 2, but 30 fully in tact plastic bags in its stomach? Why is it that we ingest more than 74,000 particles of micro plastic per year?

Because we refuse to actually hear what well educated men and women are telling us, we continue to disregard the packaging off our food, the bags we use to take out our rubbish, the containers for our makeup. Of course it is impossible to cut out plastic completely, however big corporations make it nearly impossible to reduce the amount of biodegradable plastic we purchase, but we still reuse to boycott these industries. It is far too easy to sit back and watch what we are doing to our planet, and to ourselves. After all, the planet will still be here long after we are gone until we are ready to open our eyes, but more importantly our ears, our ecosystem will continue to perish.

As Dr. Seuss once wrote, "Unless someone like you cares a whole awful lot. Nothing is going to get better. It's not."
