How to find in-person classes, for some group learning and social time
Village Home - A large, independent homeschool co-op with classes at four locations. Not affiliated with any religion, they offer a wide ever-changing variety of classes for K - 12. A good way to meet friends if you live near one of their campuses or don't mind driving. Classes tend toward the elective subjects but there are some academic classes also. For ASD kids, talk to the instructor before class starts to determine the level of support your child will need. They don't have a special needs program but you can attend with your child to assist.
Oregon Homeschool Science Club - A group run by Jilene Modlin, homeschool mom and teacher. The club offers a large variety of science classes at OMSI every Tuesday, for ages K -12, including chemistry labs, Lego architecture, biology, middle school challenge, and more. Teachers are OMSI employees. Sign up in the Spring for annual sessions starting in October. **They have changed the rules recently regarding parents helping in the classrooms. Please contact Jilene for current plans if your child will need you as an aide during class**
OMSI Camps and Classes - Mostly during the summer, OMSI offers a huge array of science and technology based camps and workshops, both on site and offsite. Contact staff ahead of time to see if you can attend with your child if they will need assistance.
Inclusion Services for Portland Parks and Rec other programs - They will provide an aide or extra supervision for children with disabilities who are attending their camps and classes.
East Portland Community Center - After school athletic options, including swimming.
Saturday Academy - Weekend and after-school time classes on a variety of science and technology related subjects. At a variety of locations around the PDX area. Contact staff ahead of time to see if you can attend with your child if they will need assistance.
ReWild Portland - Nature immersion homeschool experience, inspired by the Waldorf learning philosophy. Fridays all day, or they offer free ancestral skills classes at various Portland parks on a monthly basis.
Trackers Earth- A popular way to get outdoors and learn survival and craft skills such as archery, ceramics, blacksmithing etc. This program does require the student be fairly independent. The homeschool program is all-day, one day per week, but there is an "after school" program for about 2-3 hours in late afternoon. ASD kids might need more support than they can offer, but it depends on the child.
