As many other places in Calabria, pizzo claims ancient origins. We have alraedy presented this town in another space before but what you do not know is that pizzo may have been founded by colonists from an unknown site in ancient Magna Grecia . Consequently the history of pizzo begins in 1300 when the existence of a community of Basilian monks, a fort and a fishing village is documented.
Gagliardi’s building is situated in front of Murat’s castle and it overlooks Pizzo Marina’s seafront. Our space is a private property. The palace belongs to Mr. Aldo De Marco, who has been very entusiastic for the project, and has given his complete availability to let us use his structure. To realize our artistic creation we have been given total freedom to make any kind of permanent or temporary work. The theme to treat is also free, but it must respect the historical context, which is typical aragonese. The all façiade has been made available to work on, but it would be better to concentrate on the side which overlooks the sea, becouse it would be the most visible part of the building and we reckon the most fascinanting part. It is positioned in the historical center, one of the most visited places but this space doesn’t have the correct relevance and importance.
Despite the structure is in bad conditions and has been abandoned for several years it manages to elicit a strong nostalgic feeling in who admires it. The contrast between the chaos of the historic center and the tranquility that it trasmits, the view creates a harmony between everyday vivacity and inner peace that everyone is constantly looking for. But the moment of the day in which the place reaches its greatest splendor is certainly the setting, when the sky and the sea appear married with the sunrays, transforming the azzure of the horrizon in shades of hot colors that appear as if they contain the whole as a painting.
It is threfore a shame to continue to neglect this structure, allowing again the time to ruin such a beautiful place. We reckon correct and necessary to realize an artistic work that contributes to make the atmosphere of the place even more magical because this is an area that deserves to be seen.
These are two sketches made by students who attend the laboratory of visual arts. The first one is a sketch, made with a charcoal pencil, while the second one is made with watercolor. The materials used allow to create a contrast between light and shadow .
