Holiday Parent Art Day --
Come paint a shirt and/or a pillow cover or pillowcase for your child or friend
2 hours for $
Call to schedule time with guest artist Michael Gulliver
Bring your own pre washed shirts, pillow case, pillow cover, cloth bag, placemats, scarves, or whatever fabric item you want to paint. The higher percentage of cotton in the fabric, the better for color durability. We will provide the fabric paints and markers. The fabric does not have to be white, but remember that the fabric color will affect how the paints show up.
The instructor will be a guest artist, Michael Gulliver, whose style is shown here. He can help you do a fun large-eyed version of your child's favorite animal, or help you create your own design. Or, you can learn to transfer a simple design from a coloring book to paint.
In addition to the listed dates, you can gather your own group of 4 or more friends and schedule your own time!
See more of Gulliver's work at: Artopiah on Facebook and http://fineartamerica.com/artists/michael+gulliver

Examples from Previous Years:
October One year we went outside to look at the different shapes of leaves on trees and bushes and discuss Fall colors. This group of students, ages 5 - 9, then created a crayon resist artwork. The emphasis was to draw a variety of leaf shapes in Fall colors, adding a pumpkin if desired, for the foreground design and paint the background in a contrasting color with a watercolor wash. We also created a fun Halloween craft with pom-pom spiders and witches. The day finished with a horse lesson. See the pictures to the right below.
Last year we had fun with polymer clay witches and dip-n-drape ghosts. Watch for pictures to be posted.
November--The older students (up to age 11 at this session) used the artist Wayne Thiebaud as inspiration for compositions emphasizing food during this feast month. We used pastels for vibrant colors and the campers did well with emphasizing large foreground elements. The youngest students (age 5) used the artist Kandinsky and his circle compositions for inspiration. We also learned about Laurel Burch and her wonderful cats. We took a break with horse lessons and games. Then it was time to get back to art. Between leaf stamping and rubbing, or clay, the students chose to do the second project in clay. We made Indian inspired pinch pots and rolled leaves into clay for an interesting bas-relief. Sorry, I forgot to get pictures of the projects before they went home.
December--Gifts/crafts Printmaking wrapping paper and cards; Christmas ornaments, pom pom bears, etc. See seasonalgiftsessions
We learn about printmaking and create our own designs. Repeated design creates pattern, which is perfect for homemade wrapping paper! For the just-for-fun craft we choose between making a variety of cards with stamping, cutting and collage, or decorating satin Christmas ornaments to take home for your tree, or creating bears from pom poms, and much more.
After Christmas--Painting snow scenes; nature creations
We learn unique painting principles and create our own winter artworks, paying attention to the colors in the foreground versus the background and how to show snow on a white paper. Optionally, we paint some paper that we cut up to create a mosaic collage. Or children can choose a just-for-fun craft to make creations from natural and recycled items.
February--President's Day: The children chose to make free-standing clay creatures. We worked at making the pieces thick and strong and molding them together well so that the finished pieces will stand and stay together. The results were very successful for 1st, 4th, and 6th graders. The just-for-fun project was pom pom bears.
March/April--Spring Break: We have a great time with the stained glass theme. The kids see slides of European cathedrals, including Notre Dame. They see a variety of window shapes and designs and learn that people who couldn't read learned religious stories through the decorations of the cathedrals. We learn about stained glass windows and how the line affects the design. We then create our own designs with colors emphasized by bold lines. With varied ages we do two different projects for design skills. The younger children use tissue paper in a frame to create a design and the older kids cut their design into a frame and glue tissue paper behind. The stained glass cookies are always a hit. NOTE: This FUN day has an extra materials fee of $1 per child and each child needs to bring a cookie sheet.
