A Note from the Experts
"Children's active engagement in activities and with peers and adults is critical to early learning. Moreover, children who are actively engaged are less likely to have challenging behaviors."
Hemmeter, Louise; Fox Lise; and Snyder, Patricia: Teaching Pyramid Observation Tool for Preschooler and Classrooms
Step 1: View the Instruction Video and Slides
Download and open the slides. You will need to download this one due to the size of the file. Click the tab that says "Open With" and click Google Slides. Print the slides with speaker notes. Review the material including videos. Jot any questions you may have to discuss with your coach or team.
Step 2: Watch Engagement in Action
Watch this teacher show one example of a way to get the whole class involved in the activity.
Step 3: Review Handout
Please review the handout. Consider times when you could create a way for ALL children to respond or participate rather than one. Consider the use of manipulatives for every child, so they can respond all at the same time.
Record yourself doing a learning activity that promotes the engagement.
Step 5: Reflect Using the Observation Checklist
Watch video using the checklist provided to the right. What did you do well? What do you need to work on more? Do you have a good toolbox of transitions that children know and you use consistently?
Step 6: Share and Discuss
Share your video and checklist with your coach. Have them watch and score as well. Discuss what you both see, and where you might go next.
Family Connections
Consider choosing one or two appropriate activities to get parents and children to engage.
