As part of the investigations into cases of child abduction and illegal adoptions that occurred between 1970 and 1990, during the dictatorship, the Forensic Medical Service (SML) was able to identify a mother-child relationship between a French citizen and a Chilean woman residing in Pudahuel.
According to information from the agency, the service's Forensic Genetics Unit was able to determine the relationship through genetic profile comparisons.
The visiting minister, Paola Plaza, requested expert reports in light of the alleged victim's presence in our country.
The national director of the SML, Marisol Prado, stated that this "will help these people rebuild their lives and begin a path of reparation. We are very satisfied with the work of our professionals and technicians, which will allow a mother to reunite with her child. And it gives hope to those who have suffered something as violent and horrific as the theft of a son or daughter."
The investigations led by the SML focus on cases of irregular adoptions that occurred during this time period. This is because at that time it was determined that mothers—particularly those with limited resources—were told their children were stillborn, only to be taken away by third parties and given up for adoption.

In March of this year, the Minister of Justice, Luis Cordero, had announced the creation of a working group for cases of irregular adoptions in Chile.
The Secretary of State explained that it is an intersectoral group to coordinate the state's response to forced and irregular adoptions of children and adolescents.
During the IV International Congress on "Forced Adoptions and Crimes against Humanity," the minister addressed the issue. In that instance, he stated that "it is time to announce that the State of Chile will undertake multisectoral actions in coordination with civil society, in support of the right of every person to know their origins and the essential family reunification."
According to the Minister of Justice, the mandate was based on direct instructions from President Gabriel Boric.
