Sequencing and Scheduling- Gantt Charts, Critical Path Analysis
Sequencing and scheduling are two very important aspects that assist with structuring and ordering the transformation processes.
DEFINE:
•Sequencing refers to the order in which activities in the operations process occur.
•Scheduling refers to the length of time activities take within the operations process.
TASK ANALYSIS
A key role of the operations when scheduling and sequencing is to perform a detailed task analysis to determine the separate parts of the entire process of making a good or service.
Task analysis is the breakdown of exactly how the manufacture of a good is to be accomplished.
Two approaches (techniques) operations managers use to sequences and schedule these activities are Gantt Charts and Critical Path Analysis.
How long will it take to do each of the following activities?
Purchasing stock and establishing the supply chain
Shop refit
Contacting Jemima’s Clothing Distributors regarding the opening
Identify the least time-consuming activity.
Identify the activities that can be performed concurrently.
Visual representation of components of a task indicating start times, end times, durations and dependences. Gantt charts represent the schedule and sequence for a project
Two main advantages:
Forces a manager to plan the steps needed to complete a task within a specific timeframe.
It makes it easier to monitor and control the ops process by comparing actual performance against planned performance and take corrective action where needed.
The business can set specific dates for the completion of each stage of operations, known as milestones.
This is a scheduling method or technique that shows what tasks need to be done, how long they take and what order is necessary to complete those tasks.
It is an appropriate scheduling tool for an operations process that involves a series of repeated tasks.
It is a flow diagram which shows the interrelationship of tasks.
All the tasks need to be completed for the project to be finished.
