CITY OF LAKELAND
BUILDING PERMITS
Edward Houser
When our Committee receives an Architectural Change Request Form from one of our residents, we often times call the city permitting office to determine whether a particular job requires a permit. If the answer is “yes”, we stamp the form “Permit Required” and our approval is contingent upon the issuance of the permit.
In an effort to save time or money, a resident may choose a contractor who incorrectly claims that a permit is not needed or worse yet, charges the resident the permitting fee and never applies. It is the resident's responsibility to make sure that the permit has been issued prior to beginning any work. The city will issue fines for violations.
Skipping the permit process is a good example of “penny wise and pound foolish”. The permitting office will check the credentials of a contractor when he/she applies and, best of all, will inspect the job at various stages.
The phone number for the permitting office is 863-834-6012. You may want to call when considering a project. When calling, identify yourself as a Sandpiper resident.
