As a graduate of the Big Picture Learning program, I aspire to become a race engineer in the future, pursuing opportunities in international motorsport series.
During my years of schooling as a Big Picture student I have had the opportunity to study my passion and in doing so measure my growth and my work against six major learning goals. Those learning goals are: personal qualities, communication, knowing how to learn, empirical reasoning, quantitative reasoning and social reasoning.
Below is a snapshot of each learning goal, along with a description explaining how I have showcased these goals. This demonstrates how my educational journey has contributed to my growth as a person and as a learner.
Empirical Reasoning
For Empirical Reasoning (ER) we aim to learn through experimentation, use evidence from observations, experiences and logical process to understand, make decisions and evaluate hypotheses.
1. Project Work
Through my two Senior Thesis projects, I have reframed my inquiry questions and hypotheses, evaluated my approach to research, and critically evaluated claims.
2. Internship Work
My internship experiences have enabled me to generalise using patterns and trends, draw conclusions and evaluate claims.
3. UniStart
I displayed many ER qualities through my investigation for assessment four of UniStart. I developed a hypothesis, analysed patterns and trends, justified my approach and critically evaluated assumptions.
Knowing How to Learn
To be curious, with a drive to explore and a strong work ethic. Understanding that there are many ways of learning, knowing and making meaning. Valuing learning from sources inside and outside of school.
1. Internship
Through my internship work I have contributed to group learning, synthesised skills from a range of sources, applied reflections to initiate improvements and managed self-motivation.
2. Project Work
My STP has seen me co-create new knowledge with experts, adjust my plan as I have learnt more, develop novel solutions, manage self-motivation and engage in feedback that challenges my thinking.
3. Mentors
I have been very fortunate to work with so many incredible mentors through my time in Big Picture. I have worked to co-create new knowledge with experts, formulate new lines of inquiry and engage in feedback that challenges my thinking.
Communication
To learn to be a great communicator, to understand you audience, to write read, speak and listen well; to use technology and artistic expression to communicate.
Exhibitions
I have selected and mastered multiple communication techniques and modes to enhance impact, influenced my audience and conveyed complex ideas using specialist language through my exhibitions.
Communication with experts
Through communicating with experts, I have challenged others' understandings, facilitated collective understanding through discussion, and enhanced connections to achieve shared goals. I have also selected a range of modes to communicate.
As School Captain, I have worked to master multiple communication techniques, adapted communication in response to audience reactions, challenged others' understandings, facilitated collective understanding through discussion, and enhanced connections to achieve shared goals.
Quantitative Reasoning
To learn to use the skills, concepts and logic of mathematics to understand and interpret situations, solve problems and take action in life, learning and work.
My STP has included a lot of technical math's work. I have assessed the suitability of mathematical models, justified strategies to fit constraints, and critiqued mathematical claims. I have also demonstrated claims make sense in context, adapted strategies to suit specifications, explored mathematical applications when not immediately evident, and generalised from one problem to another.
Through my independent math's work and tutoring, I have evaluated the role of mathematics in shaping aspects of our lives, assessed the suitability of mathematical models in representing situations, justified strategies to suit conditions and critiqued mathematical claims.
Personal Qualities
To strive to be the best person you can, to demonstrate respect and empathy for others, take responsibility, be self-aware and act with courage and compassion; to reflect on your achievements and progress; to strive for personal and civic improvement.
Through my project work, I have adopted strategies to cope with events beyond my control, sought challenges as opportunities to grow, created broader networks in the community, and managed competing obligations effectively.
In my time as Captain, I demonstrated power to self-advocate, adopted strategies to cope with events beyond my control, sought challenges as opportunities for growth, managed competing obligations effectively, created broader networks in the community, advocated for others and (attempted) to lead social change.
Through my math's tutoring, I have pushed myself to be the best that I can be, and to further my knowledge and skills. I sought out challenges as opportunities to grow.
Social Reasoning
To learn to see diverse perspectives; to understand social issues; to explore ethics; to analyse and understand social systems and to look at issues historically and culturally. Learning to take responsible action to address inequity.
During my time as School Captain, I have analysed social issues to identify possible causes, applied ethical principles to issues, demonstrated cultural sensitivity and identified ways to address issues in my community. I have identified ongoing issues in my community, and identified possible causes of these issues.
