Reviving Arab Reform

Chapter 10. The Impact of Reform Programmes on Economic Growth: An Econometric Analysis

This chapter contributes to the ongoing debate on the effectiveness of reform programmes in achieving sustained growth/development for developing countries in general and Arab countries in particular. In addition, the chapter provides a more in-depth and robust analysis to support the conclusions from previous chapters regarding the effectiveness of reform programmes. The chapter aims to evaluate the economic, social and institutional reform efforts of the Arab region in comparison to advanced economies and developing countries by estimating a conditional convergence equation for economic growth during the period from 1995 to 2018.

The empirical model configuration is primarily driven by the Solow-Swan growth model, using the "Barro-type regression" estimation technique, as discussed in the methodology in chapter 3. The findings in this chapter will illustrate the similarities and differences between these groups to determine the essential components of development, as well as the challenges of growth as they relate in particular to institutions.
