Iran-Contra Affair: Scandal that erupted after the Reagan administration sold weapons to Iran in hopes of freeing American hostages in Lebanon; money from the arms sales was used to aid the Contras (anti-Communist insurgents) in Nicaragua, even though Congress had prohibited this assistance.
Fall of the Berlin Wall: Marked an end to Soviet influence in the country and allowed for Germany to become reunited. After the fall of the Berlin wall, with the approval of the victorious Allied powers of World War II, the two Germanys, divided since 1945, were at last reunited.
Fall of the Soviet Union: A process of dissolution where the republics in the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics (USSR) separated from its central government. Leading to the end of the Cold War and creating 15 post-Soviet states.
Gulf War: Conflicts between Iraq and a coalition of countries led by the United States to remove Iraqi forces from Kuwait which they had invaded in hopes of controlling their oil supply. A very one sided war with the United States' coalition emerging victorious.
Al Qaeda 9/11 Attacks: A global militant Sunni Islamist terrorist group founded by Osama bin Laden, responsible for the 9/11 attacks on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon.
Hurricane Katrina: The costliest and one of the deadliest hurricanes in the history of the United States, which killed nearly two thousand Americans. The storm ravaged the Gulf Coast, especially the city of New Orleans.
Great Recession Begins: Was the worst economic downturn in the U.S. since the Great Depression. Domestic products declined, the unemployment rate doubled, home prices fell, and at its worst point, the S&P 500 was down from its highs.
Barrack Obama Elected: The election featured a nomination battle between a woman and an African American man. An African American leader was nominated by a major party. An African American leader was elected president for the first time.
