The nest that never started or became well established is the easiest to remove. One key, regardless of type, is to take action early in the season. Their numbers are lower, their nests are smaller, and their aggression is less as well. Since the early bird gets the worm, so do early homeowners.
A common type of wasp, paper wasps, tend to take advantage of nest building opportunities. They do not mind moving into an existing next leftover from previous years. Over the winter or in early spring, a little effort to knock down an empty nest will prevent late spring and autumn problems. Once your structure has been cleaned of existing nests, you can pre-treat the base with a pesticide , so future nests won't form.
On the other hand, yellow jackets and hornets are much more difficult to prevent because of their nesting habits and locations. Unfortunately, they are the most aggressive members of the order. Yellow jackets and hornets build their nests in the ground, bushes or trees – none of which are an easy pre-treat area. These types usually do not re-inhabit old nests, so early action is still crucial in stopping the problem before it becomes something that calls for professional pest control. Still, knocking down and destroying hold nests is advised, but with a little more caution due to their aggressiveness. It’s important to make sure there are no lingering remnants from last year’s inhabitants or early arrivals to what might not be a new nest but instead, an old one.
It is generally best to wait for a while after treating a nest before attempting to remove it, unless there is a compelling reason to do so immediately. While some methods are quick acting, other require over a day for a complete nest kill. Also, wasps may have been away during the wasp removal treatment. Depending on the method and treatment used, they may require re-treatment or at least some time to let the systemic treatment act upon them.
Once you are sure that there is no remaining activity, simple mechanical means often suffice. Any long pole, stick, yard tool handle, or spare dimensional lumber will do. It can also be done by water under pressure, either from a garden hose spray nozzle or a power washer. It is possible to blow down loosely attached nests with a yard blower if you can get close enough. If you have any doubt as to whether activity has ceased, you should wait or at bare minimum, drop it directly into a container of soapy water. It is still recommended not to remove the nest by directly handling it, even if you think that all activity has stopped. Finally, if possible, put the rotten nest in a plastic bag and secure it with a lid to dispose of it in a well-ventilated disposal container.
You may want to seal off the area of intrusion if the nest is fully or partially inside of a structure. A quick and easy way to fill small crevices and holes is with spray foam. For larger areas, you may need to use the same siding material that is on your house.

Don't attempt any of this if you've ever had a bad reaction or are unsure whether or not you're allergic to stings. Particularly in light of the lack of affordability of hiring a pest control pro, the consequences are just too high.
