Whether you're thinking about doing some DIY pest control or you're looking to enlist the help of a professional pest management company, this guide is for you.
Milder winters in recent years are thought to have helped rat populations thrive, which is where professional pest services come in.
Treating a rat bite How to prevent rats Lifting the lid on refuse collection Getting rid of rats DIY rodent control Professional pest experts. The super rat and rodenticide resistance Finding a pest technician to get rid of rats.
Professional pest experts will take integrated pest management (IPM) approach to tackle your infestation.
Dee Ward-Thompson, BPCA Technical Manager, explains: “This rise in resistance could be due to a number of factors. “However, it is most likely the spread has been accelerated by the application of rodenticides,
by amateurs such as home and business owners doing it themselves or employing an unqualified individual to try to resolve the problem.” Regardless, using any kind of rodenticide should always be a last resort, and any professional pest technician worth their salt will try to exclude and trap before resorting to it.
What happens next is a pest officer will visit your home at the agreed time period to look at the evidence of the rats or mice and carry out the appropriate treatment, if required.
How to improve pest treatment success
You can increase the success rate of the treatment by making sure you keep all revisit appointments not interfering with or repositioning any bait stations keeping children and pets away from bait stations at all times removing all potential food sources eg, bird feed in the garden following all other instructions given by the pest control technician.

Apex Environmental Leeds Rat Control Solutions Our British Pest Control Association (BPCA) certified Technicians provide safe, effective solutions to get rid of rats using industry-leading treatments.
We offer a comprehensive site inspection to access the source of the attraction, breeding site, level of infestation, and to identify the rat species Our technicians can offer an effective, targeted rat and mice control tailored to your requirements.
Professional rat control is the quickest way to eradicate rodents, as they're instinctive and often sense when DIY measures, like traps and bait, are implemented.
All our employees are professionally trained to industry standards The two main species of rats causing problems are the black rat (Rattus rattus) and the, more common, brown rat (Rattus norvegicus).
This means that a pair of brown rats could potentially produce as many as 200 babies and 2,000 descendants in just one year, maybe more.
While we don't expect to see rats weigh over 500g, if food, shelter and water are in plentiful supply, with little competition, brown rats could get closer to 1kg.
For any rat infestation, we would always recommend contacting a professional pest management company, who is a member of the NPTA or BPCA.
Rats carry a wide range of diseases and parasites that are potentially harmful to humans and animals. Leptospirosis (Weil's disease) can be fatal to humans. Other diseases, such as salmonella, affect both humans and animals, and parasites can present a further hazard. Often rat infestations are a sign of a related problem, such as a drainage issue. We can give you advice on this.

As part of Apex Environmental Leeds process, we will advise you specifically on how to prevent future pest infestations, however, the following advice should always be followed:
Keep your premises in good repair to prevent rats from gaining entrance
Rats can get through a hole as small as 1.5cm and in colder weather rats will look for somewhere warmer to live
Do not allow outside areas to have become overgrown, keep gardens free from rubbish and tidy
Make sure that drains are repaired and covers are firmly fitted, any drainage works should be carried out by a competent person
Make sure all bins are kept shut and in good order
Compost bins should be placed on wire mesh and the lid kept secure
Do not overfeed wild birds, all food should be hung in suitable containers and food should not be left on the floor
Any pipes leading from the outside to the inside of the building should be sealed to prevent access
Ventilation or air bricks should be fitted with wire mesh cover
Rats may be seen during the day but are usually more active at night
Rats have poor eyesight and will follow the same routes usually close to walls or against fences, these routes are often clearly visible as trails
Rats have oily fur which will result in smear marks when they are regularly running along a route
It is sometimes possible to see rat tail swipes or footprints on surfaces
Often noises can be heard in loft spaces or within the cavities of buildings
Externally rats may burrow, and rat holes may be visible in grass banks, close to buildings or structures such as sheds, in and around compost bins and around inspection chambers
