Other Pests Plaguing Leeds Residents...

In the same period as the rats population was increasing, in another part of Leeds, pest control services have been called in for just as sinister pest problems with airborne insects.

Bees, fleas, ants, wasps, and moths saw at least 2,180 requests to bring an end to flying insect invasions. The most afflicted areas of Leeds for these were in Alwoodley, Hunslet, and Riverside, Leeds. Pest control for flying insects is required whether there's a risk of biting or not as they can easily spread pathogens around the home and on the food preparation surfaces they crawl along.

Other Types of Pests that Require a Professional Service from Pest Control Specialists

Wasp Nest Removal: Leeds Pest Control

Wasps tend to build their nests in the Spring but by the time you realise there is a wasp nest, disturbing it in any way, needs to be done by a professional service because the wasps will be swarming. It's only after there's a swarm of wasps visible that it's evident there's a nest near your premises.

It can be difficult to tell the difference between different types of bees, wasps, and hornets. However, not every nest needs removing, and some can be left alone. Britain has 250+ kinds of bees.

All bees are endangered, but none of them has protected status!

Despite this, responsible pest control services work with local beekeeping communities who can relocate swarms, mainly the European Honeybee. The Leeds Beekeepers Association help control Leeds Honeybee population offering a swarm relocation service.

If you suspect a wasp problem, it's advisable to have a knowledgeable pest control service conduct an inspection to identify the species, conduct a risk assessment and then decide on the most appropriate treatment method.

For a wasps nest removal, Leeds residents aren't necessarily at any risk. There will be if the nest is within a close distance to properties where it's likely to be disturbed. Wasps nests can be left until after the summer when they're more easily removed. This is because all wasps die off. When they're noticeable and causing a nuisance, it is advisable to have a pest control service assess the area because they will remain active for the entire summer season.

For those with allergies, pets, and families, care should be taken around wasp nests because if they are present, they will defend the queen and, unlike bees, wasps can sting multiple times. No DIY method for getting rid of a wasp nest is safe. Some are downright irresponsible and pose a larger risk to public health and safety than leaving the nest alone would be.

For responsible pest control, Leeds residents can rest assured that when we identify a wasp colony, we will intervene to destroy the nest when required. When it comes to pest control in Leeds to get rid of wasps, it needs to be done by a certified pest control service that has access to commercial-grade insecticides - inaccessible to the public. These are placed responsibly near the nest where it's accessible for wasps but inaccessible for pets and younger children. The wasps carry the insecticides into the nest, which quickly and efficiently starts killing them off.

Within just a couple of days, the activity will reduce to near-zero, then afterwards, and the nest will get destroyed. Wasps don't return, and once there's no more wasp activity, the nest can safely get removed if you want. Anyone can remove nests once the wasps are gone, but you will need a pest control service to eradicate wasps before the end of the summer season. If you don't call in professional service, the nest will remain active until the end of the summer.

Pest Control in Leeds for Bed Bugs

Bed bugs are irritating, but they are rarely dangerous. Nevertheless, they do bite, and that can cause red marks, lumps and rashes, requiring the assistance of pest control. Leeds residents can take solace in the fact that our pest control service is done diligently and discreetly, offering professional advice, and technical assistance to eradicate bed bugs from properties.

Our pest control procedures ensure our technicians conduct a thorough assessment of your property and use the most appropriate treatment method for your particular situation. Depending on the level of activity, repeat treatments may be required, and as with all pest problems, our Leeds pest control technicians work with customers pre and post-treatment to ensure the best possible outcome.

Many treatments are available to eliminate bed bugs for all contaminated areas. Despite their commonly used name being bed bugs, they are part of the Cimicidae family of insects. They can be found foraging in any number of confined spaces throughout properties, including under carpets, behind skirting boards, within wooden furniture, on headboards, in sideboards, on clothing and other fabrics.

A sure-fire way to tell if you need pest control for this problem is to turn your mattress upside down and inspect it for clusters of tiny black dots like someone's dabbed a black Biro pen on the mattress. The most activity is often seen around the buttons on mattresses.

Other signs of an infestation are visible skin redness from bites, which tend to be in rows and tiny blood speckles on bedding and on the headboard. These insects can live for up to a year without feeding though, so even nymphs can be harbouring in furniture before hatching when new furniture is introduced to your property. It's also possible for these to travel on luggage, and clothing so if you've been at a property that has an active presence of Cimicidae insects, they can (and likely will) travel, introducing a second pest problem on another property.

Where this poses a serious pest control problem is in properties with multiple occupancies. This includes hotels, hostels, guest houses, and blocks of flats. When one room gets infested, they will infest neighbouring rooms.

For pest control, Leeds residents can get in touch with us on 0113 390 4270 for advice on the best way to deal with this pest problem.

For garments in a room with a bed bug pest problem, it's advisable to wash everything at a 60oC cycle. A professional technician best treats all other furnishings, including the mattress with suitable equipment.

A sudden increase in the room temperature to over 27oC will cause nymphs to hatch. At that point, a pest control company can use a high powered vacuum with a disposable and sealable dust bag to treat affected surfaces, effectively removing the pest problem. Other crevices on hard surfaces can get treated with powder insecticides. In combination with intense dry heat treatment (94oC at 5% humidity applied at high-pressure) and suitable insecticides to ensure all nymphs that hatch as a result of the sudden increase in temperature are unable to survive. They die rapidly at sustained temperatures of 45oC. Trying to DIY this pest control procedure is often ineffective as it needs to get done suddenly, efficiently and with no chance of re-emergence.

Wasps and Bees

Being stung by a wasp or bee can be very painful, and for some, can be life-threateneing if you are allergic to stings. However, you are able to reduce these risks by taking sensible precautions when outdoors to ensure that wasp or bee nests are properly managed.

Wasps are often mistaken for bees and are also confused with other stinging insects. They are also notorious for building their nests in places where people like to gather, like around your deck, in the eaves of your house, but they can also go undisturbed in attics and lofts until they are discovered in the spring.

Queen wasps emerge from hibernation in Springtime, when the days lengthen and the weather warms to start building a wasp nest, with more worker wasps hatching as the Summer progresses. Wasps are most active in the warmer summer months. In the UK, the Common Wasp and German Wasp cause the most annoyance and painful stings. Even with their distinctive yellow and black body, they can still be confused with hornets.

Only female wasps have a sting that they can use repeatedly, if they feel threatened. Treating a wasp nest is often the most efficient way to control a wasp problem and reduce the threat of being stung.

  • Wall cavities

  • Roof spaces

  • Attics & lofts

  • Internal garages

The lifecycle of a wasp depends on the species, but in general a worker wasps ife can last 12-22 days, whil a queen can live up to a year.

Wasps can also very social creatures, and will build colonies based on how well they mate. Since the purpose of a wasps life is to mate and/or create offspring, unmated wasps will eventually die off. Any unmated wasps, whether male or female, will perish around late summer to early fall, effectively dying of loneliness.

If a nest is discovered early enough in spring, removal using DIY wasp products may be possible but the

ALL ABOUT FLEAS

( CTENOCEPHALIDES FELIS )

CHARACTERISTICS

SIZE: Tiny insects measuring about one-sixth inch in length and are laterally flattened.

COLOUR: Reddish-brown.

BEHAVIOUR: One female flea can lay about 18 eggs a day and just 20 fleas on a dog can produce 360 eggs per day and over 2,000 eggs in a week. After the home is treated with flea control products, it may take up to two weeks or more before fleas are no longer seen. Vacuuming as often as possible after the flea extermination can help shorten this time period.

HABITATS

Fleas are ectoparasites of animals, meaning they live on the outside of the body and need to feed on the blood of these animals in order to produce eggs. Because fleas usually feed and lay their eggs while the pet is sleeping, the pet's resting areas are where the most fleas will be found. Many pets acquire fleas outside in the yard, which can lead to a flea infestation inside the home. Research has demonstrated that urban wildlife, such as raccoons and opossums, are commonly responsible for introducing these biting pests onto residential properties where the pets can encounter them.

TIPS FOR CONTROL

Controlling a flea infestation successfully requires four steps:

  • Preparation for treatment

  • Treatment of pets

  • Treatment of the inside premises

  • Treatment of flea activity sites outside

Obviously, the pet is critical to minimising flea infestations, and regular grooming helps to limit fleas on the pet. For this reason, customers need to keep the pet groomed and treated with on-animal flea control products. Consult your veterinarian for assistance in treating your pets for fleas and ticks.

Step One. Any flea extermination will be less effective if the home is not prepared properly by completing the following steps:

  • Remove all items, such as toys, clothes and pet food from all floors

  • Wash or replace pet bedding.

  • Vacuum all carpets and rugs thoroughly, including beneath beds and upholstered furniture.

  • Clean all wood, tile and linoleum floors by sweeping and mopping.

  • Clean concrete floors with soap and water in the garage, basement or enclosed patio where pets rest or stay.

  • Remove all pets including birds and reptiles. Cover fish tanks with a damp towel and turn off the air pump. (Note: saltwater tanks cannot have pumps disconnected.)

  • Replace any pet bedding outdoors and make all shaded areas, crawl spaces, etc. available for treatment.

  • Arrange to be out of the home for several hours until the treatment has thoroughly dried.

Step Two. The homeowner needs to arrange for treating the pet, and this should be done at the same time that the home is treated. A number of on-animal treatment products are now available. Treatment of pets should be done under the direction of a veterinarian.

Step Three. In homes with an active flea infestation, a residual treatment combined with an insect growth regulator should be applied. The professionals at Apex Environmental Leeds flea extermination service know how to get rid of fleas by using the latest flea control products. Efforts should be focused on the areas where pets rest or sleep, as these are the sites where the most fleas will be located.

Step Four. Outside, treatment is typically applied to shaded areas and beneath shrubs and decks where pets rest or sleep.

Bird Control

Bird Control Service

Apex Environmental Leeds supply and install a range of effective, unobtrusive and humane bird control systems that are designed to safeguard buildings and working environments.

As Leeds leading bird control specialist we provide years of experience offering the widest range of bird control services and techniques to tackle any bird problem.

Anti Bird Netting from Apex Environmental Leeds

Apex Environmental Leeds bird netting systems are one of the most effective and long lasting ways of bird proofing buildings against all urban bird species. It is particularly effective for large open areas such as roofs, loading bays over building facades and under bridges.

Bird netting is constructed from high density ultra-violet stabilised knotted 12/6 polyethylene being chemically inert and rot proof in addition to offering a high resistance to a wide range of chemical and environmental conditions. The nets range from 19mm gauge to deny the smallest pest birds, rising to 50mm to deny feral pigeons and 75mm gauge against seagulls. Colours can vary but are generally black, stone or translucent as standard.

Bird Spikes

Perching deterrent spikes are a simple, maintenance-free method of preventing birds from perching or roosting on exposed features such as shop signages, drainpipes, guttering and narrow ledges.

These stainless steel spikes do not harm the birds, they are flexible, withstand UV light and can be installed almost anywhere with a specialist adhesive avoiding the need to penetrate the building shell. This is of particular use when a building surface cannot be drilled as with lead flashing, parapets and capping stones.

Bird point is available in widths that will protect ledges from 50mm wide up to 320mm in a single row.

It is important to note that despite their flexibility and effectiveness wherever pigeons attempt to perch, bird point is less successful in very sheltered places. Pigeons have even been known to build nests on top of the spikes if it means they get to stay in their preferred nesting area. Don’t worry though; we’ll tell you what’s suitable and guarantee our recommendations so the birds don’t come back.

Gull deterrent spikes are a heavier duty version of the pigeon spikes and have a slightly longer spike, preventing them from landing on the leading edges of buildings, exposed features such as lamp-posts, drainpipes and guttering.

The Birdpoint system is available with plastic or stainless steel prongs from 304 grade to 316 grade stainless.

For a quotation please enquire online or give us a call to book a free survey.

Bird Wire

Bird wire is an almost invisible tensioned wire system that prevents birds from perching in light pressure areas of infestation.

Bird deterrent wires are a less aggressive-looking method of preventing pigeons from attempting to perch on narrow building features such as window sills and stone or brick ledges. They work by preventing birds from looking over ledges into potential feeding sites as well as discouraging them from settling or landing.

Bird wire can be used for the following applications

  • Light pressure bird problems

  • New buildings where birds have not yet started to roost

  • Buildings where a discreet bird proofing method is required

  • Glass fronted buildings.

Nylon-coated wires are secured and tensioned between 100mm or 130mm tall stainless steel posts set at 1.3 meter centres and fixed into stone or brick using a 25mm nylon anchor plug. Pigeon wires are usually arrayed in two or three parallel rows to make it difficult for any bird to land and move around freely.

Supporting posts can also be powder-coated and welded to brackets for use on more fragile surfaces or where it is important to maintain a weather seal – such as on cladding panels or lead flashing. They can be fixed directly into stone and brick, but can also be mounted onto purpose-made brackets for fixing to cladding and leaded surfaces.

Gull Wire

In the same way pigeon wires deter birds from perching near feeding sites, this heavy-duty version of the same system prevents gulls from settling and using ledges as daytime vantage points. The stronger wires and taller posts will stand up more readily to the weight of the larger birds and will cause them to look elsewhere for a perch.

When installed correctly, the wires are a discreet and effective deterrent against pigeons and gulls.

If you require a bird wire installation please contact Apex Environmental Leeds, give us a call to book a free site survey

Decontamination

Birds can generate large amounts of droppings and related guano on external areas of buildings and inside roof spaces if left untreated.

There are several serious health and safety concerns related to bird droppings and associated waste, which are categorised as follows:

  • Organisms developing in birds and passed to humans, e.g ornithosis. This organism is found in the bird gut, Infection from the gut, nasal and eye secretion contaminates fouling, feathers and nesting material which can survive many months in dry dust and droppings. Disease transmission to humans is caused through inhaling the contaminated dust.

  • Organisms feeding / growing in birds nests e.g. Flies, Lice, Fleas, Insect ticks, Mites but also fungi that can also cause severe and sometimes fatal lung tissue infections.

  • Organisms picked up and spread by birds e.g Salmonella and other diseases from contaminated foods, sewage plants, and agricultural sites.

Clearing of fouling, nesting material and bird carcasses is unpleasant work and is often carried out at height and in cramped situations such as roof spaces, which can pose its own set of health and safety problems.

Apex Environmental are fully experienced in providing a full fouling and decontamination service. As standard a full COSHH, Method Statement and Risk Assessment will be undertaken during the survey and prior to any works being carried out to ensure the work is in line with all relevant Health and Safety Regulations

Once all fouling, nesting material and associated debris is removed the entire area is disinfected with a specialist biocide to make the area 100% safe, all Pesticides used in the control/treatment of fouling are selective and applied to ensure public safety, once completed work will be signed off with a certification of completion.

Pest Control Leeds, West Yorkshire, UK

Throughout Leeds, both in the inner-city and the rural outskirts, pest control services are inundated with calls from concerned residents. For a number of years, the City of Leeds has been facing an unprecedented rise in requests for pest management assistance related to not just the influx of rats and mice, but flying insects too, including calling on pest control for nest removal services to get rid of ants, hornets, and over the summer, wasp nests.

Pest Control Services: A Key Service in England

Right at the time when Leeds was facing a rat epidemic in March of 2020, lockdown shut the sector down. After lobbying by trade industry bodies. Westminster finally U-turned their decision to give pest control services the green light to help fight the initial epidemic. And called for pest control services to help fight the battle plaguing Leeds and the wider West Yorkshire district for at least the past 3-years!

The Yorkshire Evening Post published statistics for Leeds City Council pest control requests in 2019, showing they'd received 8,322 pest control calls in the past two years, so going back to 2017. The fight remains ongoing for pest control: Leeds residents need immediate assistance to control Leeds' huge pest problems. This is reflected in the 2020 government decision to U-turn on the key worker status, and get pest control professionals back into the field.

Apex Environmental Leeds, is providing much-needed pest control services in Leeds, assisting homeowners and tenants across the social and private tenant sector to control rat and mice infestations.

The most affected regions in need of professional pest control services in Leeds is the Gipton and Harehills Ward. In these locations, there has been a heightened increase in rat activity - most prominently, the Rattus Norvegicus species. The rat is identifiable as a brown rat, weighing around 0.5 kg, which burrows their way into properties where they take up residence in the walls, under the floorboards, and in roof spaces.

Pest control specialists are needed to bring any rat infestation under control as these rodents urinate consistently, breed like wildfire, and pose a real risk to public health from diseases including salmonella, and although more rarely, leptospirosis (Weil's Disease).

If you suspect a rat problem in or around your property, don't hesitate to call in our pest control technicians. For years, our service has provided results-driven pest control. Leeds residents and business owners have come to rely on our services.

We are available 7 days a week to provide advice, inspections, pest control treatments and integrated pest management solutions to homeowners, tenants, landlords and business owners.
