Character-driven

This is my first foray into the universe of Starfinder. I don't have the entire universe memorized, nor do I really want to. I want to bring in the elements I discover and love, I want to bring in elements that you love, and we'll make up everything else. Since what you bring in shapes the game for everyone, including my own planning, characters need to get passed by me before you get too attached.

Eve: Coax is a Ysoki Icon Mechanic, and she's entered a reality show on her home planet of Verces - she's has one year to build a giant robot and get to the Bot Busting Arena in the Diaspora. If there's any broken robot or ship parts, I'll want to collect them to build my bot - I don't expect any in-game effects from building a giant war-bot without taking the appropriate feats, but I'd really like a big scene later on in the game. Using my camera-drone, I plan on broadcasting everything I do, and I tend to talk to the camera a lot and spend my down-time between editing and tinkering.

So, this is great; Eve's requested background brings in the following elements: ysoki, icons, mechanics, verces, the diaspora, an entire TV show, incentives like robot parts, publicity, potential rivals in the same event, family and friends back on her homeworld, contacts with other mechanics. Other players might not want their life broadcasted, so we can work that out beforehand with the other players.

Frank: So, I want to play an Android Operative with an 18 Dex, specializing in Acrobatics and Stealth, Weapon Focus (Small Arms), with a Tactical Semi-Auto Pistol and an Azimuth Laser Pistol. I haven't picked a theme yet, not sure what works.

As a GM, I get the sense that the player gets their fun from being an effective stealth fighter and doing a lot of damage in combat, but not a lot else. I'd turn this around to Frank and ask for some more character hooks so they have more than combat to look forward to, and to make sure that if we have a session with no combat, that they still have fun.

Grace: I want to play a Vulcan James Bond, totally the best at spying, a lone-wolf that only relies on himself and leaves a trail of bodies behind him.

This one's a problem - my game, as I've described it, is about pushing for peaceful solutions short of war, and the whole lone-wolf thing is poison for party unity. It's fine for many other games, but goes against how this one is designed. Plus, Starfinder already has a rich set of aliens to use, and I'd like to stick to that and not wander into Star Trek. In short, the tropes just don't fit.

So - we talk. Turns out that Grace wants to be self-reliant, emotionless, and have some strong bluff and diplomacy skills, as well as a strong reputation. That we can do in game, and after some reworking, Grace comes back with an Envoy Themeless Lashunta (Damaya) that suits her goals and fits into the game well.
