Betreff: Info

Goodbye Lisa
We received the sad news that our dear member, Lisa van Scharrel, has died. Lisa had been a very loyal member of the club for many years, serving on the committee and as our founder member Dorothy Elchlep got older accompanied her by car to the conversation evening held in the Merian Schule, where Lisa taught until her retirement. We often teased Lisa that she was the Anglo German Club’s Queen, as she was born in the same year as the late Queen. She was fortunate to have been able to live her very long life actively and independently until shortly before her death this month. She remained an active member of the club attending many events, which towards the end of her life was made easier for her by the kindness of members who collected her and brought her home. We shall miss her and her dry sense of humour and are so very pleased that our Xmas party in December has been made that much more memorable by the fact that she was with us all. We extend our sincere condolences to her sister and her extended family. The funeral is at the Bergäcker Friedhof in Littenweiler, on Wednesday, 3rd May, at 1pm.

Message from Penny and Ernst - 17th February 2023
Dear members,
Dr. Rolf Jackisch , president of The Deutsch Französische Gesellschaft , has sent us an invitation to their concert in remembrance of the ’ Elysée Treaty’, which was signed 60 years ago.
The ‘where, when and what’ can be found in the attachment.
Dr Jackisch has asked that you will let us know, asap, if you would like to attend. We shall then forward the information to him, and he will reserve seats in your name. Payment and collection of tickets on the evening of the concert.
Some of you will remember our very enjoyable trip to Besancon with Dr Jackisch and the DFG, and it very kind of them to include us in their event.
We have arranged a get together in our Christmas venue , Hotel Schiff, on the 2nd of March, 7pm. In order to get the right seized room we appreciate if you could let us know – by phone or mail - whether you would like to come.
With our best wishes
Penny & Ernst

Freiburg, Christmas 2020
Father Christmas 2020
Ho, ho, ho, a very downbeat Santa, sitting here, am I.
No Anglo German party, and you all know the reason why.
That beastly, dreaded virus, a world wide ‘Pandemie’,
And it’s jolly well stopping me coming down your chim-n-ey!!
And for red, white and blue, and black, red and gold,
A break in your proud tradition, that 62 years long you have kept hold.
But mark my words, next year, with Rudolph, I’ll be back,
and with all your pressies filled to the brim in my Anglo German sack!
Till then AHA: hands, face and space you must definitely all keep,
with that BioNtech shot in your arm, we’ll put Corona back to sleep,
and then with masks off, at high volume, those carols you will sing,
And, maybe, even a dance, perhaps an Eightsome reel or even a Highland Fling?
Those crackers you will pull and with paper crowns upon your head
you’ll chat and laugh and that long Santa poem will be read!
So just hang on in there,
All you Anglo German members dear,
and your jolly old Santa will be back with you again next year.
So, with hope in our hearts, a farewell I say to you,
( those pressies will wait for the ladies pink, the gentlemen blue! )
And now this toast, as every year for you:
“To absent friends and Anglo German friendship true,
and a Merry Xmas and a Happy New Year to one and all of you!”

Notice - a message from Our Treasurer Ingrid Pabst
Dear members of the Anglo-German Club,
2020 so far really has been an unusual year for us all and for our club, too. Due to Covid our activities were most restricted, and consequently the club’s expenditures, also.
That’s why we thought we could cancel your membership fee for a year.
BUT since quite a number of you - scrupulous as always - paid the fee for 2020 already and in order to avoid a terrible “Kuddelmuddel” Ernst, Penny and the rest of the committee decided to ask you all not to pay membership fees in 2021. Does that appeal to you all?
Nevertheless, having already experienced three quarters of the year 2020, may I kindly ask all of you to verify if you paid your fees for 2020?
Should you find out that this isn’t the case yet, please help me to complete my list of settled membership fees 2020 in the near future.
Just a short reminder: Anglo-German Club Freiburg, IBAN DE20 6805 0101 0002 0099 13

Thanking you very much in advance for your agreement I send you my best regards

Dear members
Attention! Attention!!
Our member Francesca very kindly has forwarded the below and drawn our attention to this English Renaissance Concert taking place on our own doorstep in Oberried TOMORROW at 5 pm. Rather than selfishly keeping the information just for ourselves we have thought there might be some of you who would like to join us. There is no ticket price but Francesca thought Euro 15 euro approx. We have also booked a table for after the Concert at the Goldener Adler to enjoy a viertele and a bite afterwards. We have booked the table for between 6.30 and 7pm.
We realise that this is all very unexpected and impromptu but if you would like to join us, please let us know by 6pm this evening.
The “Evening with the Bard “was a great success even though there was such a small audience the actors were so very pleased to be performing again and one can be sure it is the same for the musicians below.
Apologies for such late notice but better late than never …. and a big thank you to you, Francesca, for keeping us informed.
With our very best wishes to you all and with our hopes that in spite of Corona we will still be able to continue meeting up in a socially distanced and appropriate way.

Received from the Guildford Twinning Association
Hallo,
I'm writing to you from the University of Southampton as a group interested in the promotion or teaching of the German language, to invite you and anyone you know who may be interested, to an online public lecture on bilingualism. In this lecture, Professor Jason Rothman, a world-leading expert in bilingualism and multilingualism, will discuss the facts and myths about bilingualism as it relates to how languages are acquired and processed, potential benefits that bilingualism might have at the cognitive (mind and brain), economic and social level, the tradeoffs of bilingualism, and the local, national and global context of bilingualism.
I thought that because, as a Anglo-German association, you have an interest in promoting language learning and you may find this lecture interesting. We're hoping to make academic research on bilingualism and its benefits accessible to all, which could be useful as you try to promote language learning and policy.
This free public lecture will be held online via a Zoom webinar and live-streamed on YouTube. You can find some more details below. If you are interested in attending the event, please make sure you pre-register so that we can send you the link beforehand.

When Hester Collyer is found by her neighbours in the aftermath of a failed suicide attempt, the story of her tempestuous affair with a former RAF pilot and the breakdown of her marriage to a High Court judge begins to emerge.
