Exhibit 1

Background Information:

For this exhibit we were asked by USU Stars - Gear Up to create a digital display. The purpose of the display is that would motivate or encourage middle or high school students to reach for higher education. The requirements for the display were 1920x1080 pixels at 72 DPI.

Design:

  • Contrast: The contrast between the dark, bold words and the light background help the words pop, so they didn’t get lost in the background. I also added an opaque blue rectangle behind the Utah State logo to help draw your eye to where you are supposed to start reading.

  • Repetition: Repetition was used in repeating the blues and whites in the text and shapes, to go along with the color scheme of the photo. I also used repetition by using the color drop tool on the Utah State Logo and applying to the text.

  • Alignment: By using a right alignment for the "belong here" text, it helps the reader/viewer focus on the Utah State Logo. I also chose to align the written information to the left of the students so they were clear to read, but you can still focus on the students belonging together.

  • Proximity: I picked a group of diverse students near an iconic location at Utah State for proximity. Old Main has a rich history and is a well identified building on Campus, along with the famous A platform. I wanted to also incorporate the Utah State logo as part of the tag line for “U” Belong Here so students could imagine themselves going to school at Utah State University. The original photo didn't have enough blank space to use to have the text standout, so I used the clone stamp tool to remove one of the kids in the photo to create more space.

  • Font Choice: I chose Arial Black because I wanted the text to be thick and easy to read.

Skills Used:

To create this design, I used Adobe Bridge, Adobe Camera Raw, and Adobe Photoshop.

  • I reviewed what photo to use in Adobe Bridge.

  • I then sharpened the stock photo in Camera Raw.

  • Then I created the layout of the design in Photoshop by using rectangular shapes, changing the opacity on the rectangular shapes, clone stamp, content-aware fill.
