TPE 4 focuses on instruction practices and techniques and encourages beginning teachers to use twenty-first century best-practices in their classrooms. Teachers should develop instruction with attention to students' specific backgrounds, accommodation needs, and general developmental stage. Most importantly, teachers are directed to use UDL best-practices (including digital tools and multiple means of representation, engagement, and expression) to support all learners. All learners includes students with disabilities, English-language learners, and others with specific learning needs.
The artifact I have included for TPE 4 is my final assignment for MALT 601, which investigates teaching paradigms from a historical and political perspective. The currently favored paradigm in education (Progressive paradigm) focuses not on how to teach, but rather, on how learning happens. One of the central tenets of the paradigm is that learning requires the interested involvement of the student interacting with concepts and materials in the world. As elaborated today, the Progressive paradigm embraces positive formulations of multiculturalism, diversity, critical theory, and social justice. Although the specific pedagogical practices of progressive classrooms vary, they are unified by a commitment to centering students as the primary agents in their own learning. I am committed to the values and practices of UDL and progressive education in my practice.
