Under the aegis of WHO, every year World Antimicrobial Awareness Week (WAAW) is celebrated from 18-24 November. The slogan for WAAW 2022 remains 'Antimicrobials: Handle with care' and the theme for this year is 'Preventing Antimicrobial Resistance Together'. In an effort to improve the visibility of this health priority globally, the WHO has initiated a colour campaign to build awareness for the same. Light blue has been selected as the colour of the campaign. The WAAW 2022 calls on ‘One Health’ stakeholders, policymakers, health care providers, and the general public to be Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR) Awareness champions.

Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR)
The World Health Organization (WHO) has declared antimicrobial resistance (AMR) as one of the top 10 global health threats. Antimicrobials, especially antibiotics have saved millions of lives over the past several years since their discovery. Unfortunately, misuse and overuse of these medicines is leading to increasing resistance to antimicrobials in disease-causing microorganisms, making even common infections difficult to treat. A person at any age, anywhere in the world can get an infection that is resistant to treatment. This could take a huge toll on human lives and livelihoods in the near future unless urgent action is taken at a global scale to reduce antimicrobial resistance.
Many factors like overuse and misuse of antimicrobial drugs in humans, livestock, aquaculture and agriculture, as well as poor access to clean water, sanitation and hygiene have increased the threat of AMR globally. Although millions of people worldwide are affected by AMR infections every year there is a huge lack of public awareness about AMR, its development, effects and spread.
In tune with WAAW 2022, we at the Anti-Microbial Research (AMR) Lab, are organizing various free online events as part of our continuous social outreach efforts under the Scientific Social Responsibility (SSR) measures as promoted by the Department of Science and Technology (DST), Govt. of India. It is open to the public at large.
