Under the aegis of WHO, every year World Antimicrobial Awareness Week (WAAW) is celebrated from 18-24 November. The slogan for WAAW 2021 is 'Antimicrobials: Handle with care' and the theme for this year is 'Spread Awareness, Stop Resistance'. In an effort to improve the visibility of this health priority globally, the WHO has initiated a colour campaign to build awareness for the same. This year light blue has been selected as the colour of the campaign. The WAAW 2021 calls on ‘One Health’ stakeholders, policymakers, health care providers, and the general public to be Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR) Awareness champions.

The World Health Organization (WHO) has declared antimicrobial resistance (AMR) as one of the top 10 global health threats. Antimicrobials, especially antibiotics have saved millions of lives over the past several years since their discovery. Unfortunately, misuse and overuse of these medicines is leading to increasing resistance to antimicrobials in disease-causing microorganisms, making even common infections difficult to treat. A person at any age, anywhere in the world can get an infection that is resistant to treatment. This could take a huge toll on human lives and livelihoods in the near future unless urgent action is taken at a global scale to reduce antimicrobial resistance.

In tune with WAAW 2021, we at the Anti-Microbial Research (AMR) Lab, are organizing various free online events as part of our continuous social outreach efforts under the Scientific Social Responsibility (SSR) measures as promoted by the Department of Science and Technology (DST), Govt. of India. It is open to the public at large.
