Since 2014, I have conducted (in most years) a series of surveys asking folks about their Favorite models on each mold!
This series has evolved quite a bit over time! I started with surveys for Stablemates, Classics, Traditionals, and Traditional Foals. Over the years, I have split out groups of molds in order to make the surveys more user-friendly, and along the way, added photos to as many options as possible to improve the participant experience.
The Traditional adult surveys also feature questions at the end asking "what is your favorite mold" and "what is your least favorite mold" for each decade. My reach on these surveys is still building over time, and I have not yet passed the point of allowing folks to skip voting for molds they don't care for. If I did so currently, there would be some molds that would not get very much, if any data simply because they are not popular within the general hobby population (such as Khemosabi). For each mold that a person doesn't like, I ask them to choose the colorway that they'd most like to see on a different mold (that they do like)! Hopefully, the parting out of surveys does also help to alleviate this problem to some degree. If a person really doesn't care for the 1980's adult Traditional molds in particular, they can skip that survey, for example.
One of my biggest longitudinal questions that I am tracking on revolves around the evolution of popularity. Do some models see a spike in popularity when they are new, but fade to the background as newer releases some out? Are they maintaining strong popularity over time? Do they see a jump in popularity several years or later after their release/retirement? Or are they consistently less popular?
I make it a point to *not* define "Favorite", as leaving it open for interpretation makes it more accessible to the participants (and honestly, I vary how I define it myself as I'm taking the surveys!) It could be favorite that you own, a grail, best show horse, sentimental favorite, a color you really like or think was done particularly well, or any other definition that helps you make your choices!
Survey results, including longitudinal results, are available for a period of time following the end of the survey. I don't keep passing along the results for more than a few months after each annual session, as I would prefer that the previous results do not affect the choices that people make the following year. December 12th, 2022 - Link to results has been removed. Please join us for the next survey session!
I'm always happy to answer questions that you may have about the surveys!
This survey series runs annually from February to April!
