Target User: Children ages 3 to 5. The toy should be easy to grasp and operate for small hands. It must be simple enough for a 3-year-old to enjoy, yet feature-rich enough to keep a 5-year-old engaged.
Design Direction: Inspired by vintage utility vehicles, especially classic John Deere tractors and 1950s Chevy tow trucks. The aesthetic should balance nostalgic charm with bold, playful forms.
Safety Requirements: All components must be securely attached and large enough to eliminate choking hazards. Materials should be non-toxic, durable, and able to withstand rough handling.
The tow truck concept was chosen for its strong potential to support both independent play and interactive group play.
Key features were designed to enhance engagement: loading arms encourage hands-on interaction, a functional winch adds mechanical play value, textured wheels improve grip for smooth surfaces, and custom 3D-printed hardware.
2mm EVA foam was precision laser cut, while ¾" plywood components were hand routed with a laser cut MDF template. All custom hardware was 3D printed and finished in authentic Chevy Orange.
The Little Hauler’s versatile features make it ideal for growing children, evolving with their interests and developmental needs. It supports independent play while encouraging social interaction through elements like its functional winch, which allows for collaborative play with other toys and peers.
