Architectural Design III requires the integration of architecture to the genius loci and designing architecture to be expressive, functional and responsive to the specific site. The key emphasis of the studio is “Experiencing Space and Place”, which investigates cultural values and the influence of the local community in the creative architectural process.

METAMORPHISIS
Our experiential design explores the transformation of man from youth to adulthood, the desperate realization of a view that will never last. The dark pathway is illuminated by a reassuring guidance of sunlight, reminding us of our naïve younger selves who were safe and secure from the darkness of the older world. As the mesmerizing light beam slithers along the winding pathway of growing up, the curiosity of a gentle rush of flowing water further leads us on. As we walk along this path of maturity, we discover a large blinding chasm; the sudden greeting of a breathtaking new world. Unfamiliar and terrifying, we slowly descend deeper; reaching a point of contemplation. Light no longer guiding us, but instead teases us of the Great Beyond. Questioning whether to continue to descend the mysterious path or to stay in familiarity, the trickling sensation pricks the ears. Eventually, the path leads into a veil of water; cleansing us of our negative thoughts. The light dances through the water, a shadow of what it once meant to us. Accepting that nothing lasts forever, the final ascent leads us to the Great Beyond; a sea of limitless possibilities.

Kampung Baru Machap Baru, previously Machap Lama, is a slow-paced village in Melaka, Although there are different races in the kampung, all the villagers are living together harmoniously since early times which can be seen through the Chinese elements in Machap Old Mosque. Furthermore, Machap Old Mosque has been listed in the National Heritage, bringing more tourists to visit the place. Nowadays, Machap Walk offers a variety of food during weekends. By walking the entire street, unity of race can be witnessed, serving as evidence upholding the spirit of 1 Malaysia.

Journey is an act of traveling from one place to another. By the act of entering the large "pintu gerbang" of Kampung Baru Machap Baru, we are traveling into a village filled with a deeply rooted culture of the simple old days of the Hakka Chinese life, happily existing unbeknownst to the modern outside world; a journey into another way of living.

However, living in isolation has its disadvantages: it exists in a fragile state and is susceptible to the pressure of modernization from the outside world. Though we should usher the new generation, we must never forget to maintain the purity of the journey.

The concept therefore is Transition: the process of change and progress in order to successfully transfer the village's message to the world into the next generation.
