In this assignment, I was required to conduct a case study on a building designed by a notable architect to study the effect of application of materiality on its image and characteristics. We were to research on its architectural and structural features to produce a well-composed infographic detailing our analysis as well as an overall conclusion on the choice of materials.
All in all, I have learnt a great deal regarding the materiality concepts of my chosen architect, Ludwig Mies van der Rohe, when designing his Barcelona Pavilion. I have understood the different attributes that define the characteristics of the architectural and structural elements of the building, as well as being able to present it in an organized infographic. Lastly, I have concluded my thoughts on the materiality choices made and what it means for the overall significance of the building.
In this assignment, I was required to form a group of 7 in order to showcase a very thorough understanding of the design to building process. Here, I had to demonstrate my knowledge of integrating design choices into reality, in a series of clear and concisely annotated drawings of construction technical details. Once given our task of a timber construction building, we began illustrating all the necessary steps from the preconstruction process to the finishing installation details and orthographic drawings.
In conclusion, this assignment has opened my mind about the practicality of design choices during the construction process. I have understood how structural elements are designed and applied during construction in a series of drawings that display clear information, such as dimensions and materiality, to the viewer. The preconstruction and foundation processes have given me insight on how technology is applied in the construction of the building as well.
