Allen Elementary Science Olympiad Team is a proud participant in the Washtenaw Elementary Science Olympiad (WESO)! WESO is an exciting competition that brings together young scientists from elementary schools across the county. It provides an opportunity for students in grades 2-5 to showcase their knowledge, creativity, and teamwork in many different events focused on a variety of scientific disciplines from building structures to learning about the stars. Each event encourages exploration and growth.Â
Our event teams hold weekly practices led by Event Coaches starting in February, where our students prepare for the county-wide Science Olympiad competition usually held in May.
By participating in Science Olympiad, students develop critical thinking, problem-solving, communication skills, and a strong sense of school spirit. They gain a deep understanding of the scientific process and the joy of learning. We are proud to have dedicated educators, coaches, and volunteers who support our team and provide resources for success.
At Allen Elementary, our Science Olympiad journey begins with the recruitment of dedicated Event Coaches, who are often parent volunteers from the Allen community. In January, once we have identified coaches for each event, we start the process of recruiting teams. These teams typically consist of 2-5 students per grade. Once the teams are formed, the real excitement begins as we embark on a series of weekly practices. These practices are held at Allen Elementary after school or in the evenings, providing students with ample time to prepare for their respective events. The practice sessions run from mid-February until the competition, which usually takes place in May. Typically, we have around 10 weeks of focused and funfilled practices, where students refine their skills, master event-specific knowledge, and collaborate as a team in pursuit of excellence.
