Fishermen and the Family

Updated August 27, 2023

The photo above is of the six Alioto brothers and 4 other men from San Francisco, California (circa 1925). The brothers include: (back row standing left to right) Ignacio (1888-1962), Giuseppe (1887-1961), and Francesco (1896-1964). The fifth man standing to the far left has not been identified. The middle row includes Sal Tarantino (? ), Nunzio (1892-1933) and Giovanni (1901-1947).  The front row includes Salvatore (1903-1971) and 2 unknown men. I am currently working on finding out the identities of the 4 other men in the photo.

The International Fish Company started by Giuseppe Alioto, father of the former mayor of San Francisco, Joseph Alioto

THIS PICTURE WAS TAKEN AT GIANDUJA RESTAURANT ON FEBRUARY 21, 1921. THESE PEOPLE WERE ALL MEMBERS OF THE TRAWLING ASSOCIATION. OUR GREAT-GRANDFATHER, FRANK (FRANCESCO) ALIOTO, IS STANDING AT THE END OF THE TABLE ON THE LEFT, THE SECOND PERSON FROM THE LEFT. GIOVANNI IS STANDING AT THE END OF TABLE, THE FOURTH PERSON FROM THE LEFT. GIUSEPPE IS SITTING 3RD FROM THE LEFT IN THE 2ND  ROW. SALVATORE IS SITTING IN THE 2ND  ROW FROM THE LEFT THIRD FROM THE FRONT.

This is a photo of the Marine Commercial Company's 2nd annual dinner, held on April 28, 1913 at the Rose Cafe. Giuseppe Alioto, President of the San Francisco International Fish Company, as well as Arttilio Paladini, son of Achille Paladini, founder of the A. Paladini Fish Compay. Giuseppe once worked for Paladini and then started his own business in 1908  at 538 Washington Street in San Francisco. Giuseppe was the father of the former mayor of San Francisco, Joseph Alioto.  It is believed that Giuseppe is seated 2nd from on the left.

This picture was taken by the Piggot Company of San Francisco. I do not know the year in which this was taken. My great-grandfather, Francesco, is sitting in the 2nd row from the left, 4th one up (you can see the top of his head, but another person is in his way).  I do believe there are two of my great-great uncles on the boat. I believe Sal Alioto is sitting in the 2nd row from the right third one in. He is wearing a sportcoat and tie. He is sitting right next to Ignacio Alioto. Ignacio is the man with the tie and vest on in the front to the right. I am working to get some names to go with the faces as soon as I can.

Left to right:  Bustianedo (Sebastian) Alioto, John Machi, an unknown / unidentified young man (possibly Mario Alioto Sr.), Frank DeLucca, Jack D'Acquisto, Frank Alioto (Carlo Alioto's son), Frank Alioto (Francesco, my great-grandfather), Hank Tarantino?, Sal Arioto.  Circa 1938.

THIS IS A PICTURE OF FRANCESCO ALIOTO, MY GREAT-GRANDFATHER, IN FRONT OF F. ALIOTO FISH COMPANY ON JEFFERSON STREET  IN SAN FRANCISCO. HE IS HOLDING A FISH WITH SAL TARANTINO. THE MAN WITH THE CIGARETTE IN HIS MOUTH IS DOMINIC BEDONE.

THIS IS A PICTURE OF ONE OF THE BOATS MY GREAT-GREAT UNCLE, GIUSEPPE ALIOTO (FATHER OF FORMER MAYOR JOSEPH ALIOTO) OWNED. THE CAPTAIN OF THIS BOAT WAS CALOGERO "CARLO" ALIOTO, 2ND COUSIN TO GIUSEPPE.  THESE MEN WERE OUT CATCHING HALIBUT.  THIS PHOTO IS WAS TAKEN SOMETIME IN THE 1930s

ABOVE IS THE WEDDING PICTURE OF SEBASTIAN AND MARY ALIOTO. TO THE LEFT OF THE BRIDE IS SAL ALIOTO. TO THE RIGHT OF THE GROOM IS ERMINIA RUGGIERO AND HER FUTURE HUSBAND, MY GREAT-GREAT UNCLE, MARIO BALESTRIERI, BROTHER OF MARIA CONCETTA (BALESTRIERI) ALIOTO. THE DATE OF THIS PHOTO IS UNKNOWN, BUT JUDGING UPON THE FACT THAT MARIO AND ERMINIA ARE NOT MARRIED YET, THIS PHOTO IS CIRCA 1920.

THE SEBASTIAN IN THE PHOTO IS ALSO KNOWN AS BUSTIANEDO,  THE MAN STANDING IN THE PHOTO ON THE FAR LEFT TWO PHOTOS ABOVE THIS!

This is the wedding picture of Carmela Cecilio and Paul Spadaro in Monterey, California,  during the early 1940s. I believe Paul's family was in the fish business. His good friend, my grandfather, Mario Alioto Sr., is standing to the far left in the picture. I believe my great aunt, Anna Capurro, is standing in front of my grandfather. I am sorry about the quality of the photo, but the original has shown some signs of wear over the years.

This is a photo of Nunzio Alioto, owner of the N. Alioto  Fish Company. This photo was taken in 1946. Nunzio was  the son of Francesco Alioto

and Francesca (Billante) Alioto. He would be my 2nd cousin 3x removed.

N. Alioto's owned by Nunzio Alioto, also owner of the N. Alioto  Fish Company. This photo was taken in the 1970s
