Project Description:
In this assignment, we learned the basics of the applications Microsoft Word and Excel and PowerPoint. I will be reflecting on the material I newly learned from taking the Office Training Simulations.
Microsoft Word:
(This is the new updated logo my laptop has)
I used to feel like I knew word, I have used it since elementary school. However, I barely used it in high school as BCPS mainly switched to Google docs. So, when I entered college, I had to relearn how to use it, but it was not a huge deal as was mostly muscle memory. In addition, for my job here at CCBC I had to take a Microsoft skills assessment and had to get a certain score on word which I passed. Even though I thought I understood how to use word completely and there would be nothing new there were still news things I learned from this lesson.
Key Features I discovered:
Styles: Adds structural support, headings, and titles to documents.
Format Painter: Copy the format of texts previously used without having to re-click on everything.
Microsoft Excel:
Prior to college I never had to use excel. Still, even in college I've used it maybe a handful of times. However, I had to learn how to use excel without the search bar for the Microsoft skills assessment I had to take to acquire my current job. Excel has never been my strong suit, and I know I will never be able to fully understand it, but this unit helped me to gain more of an understanding on how to use it effectively.
Key Features I discovered:
Wrap Text: Adjusts longer texts to not be cut off in the cells
Merge and Center: Combines multiple cells into one, usually to make a banner
AutoSum: Finds the correct sum of an equation of two or more columns/rows
PowerPoint:
I have used PowerPoint on nearly every presentation and project since middle school. Skipping high school as again, BCPS switched to Google Slides as it was easier to manage with Schoology. I feel like I had known previously how to use this tool effectively, but still there was more to learn from this lesson.
Key Features I discovered:
Variants for Designs: Changes colors and layout of the different designs provided by PowerPoint
Slide Sorter: Shows all slides in cubes to allow easy order switching
Notes: Allow you to add your main points in more detail to be able to follow the 6x6 rule for your slides and still not miss any details while in presenter view
Lessons Learned
Prior to this lesson I thought that I knew more than I actually did. This lesson retaught me the "basics" of these applications as well as new and important tools. I hope to be able to take the new knowledge I learned about these tools and continue to use them throughout the rest of my educational and career journeys.
